Best Damn Garage in Town
I'm sure most of you remember Smokey Yunick. Racer, mechanic, inventor, and about a dozen more hats he wore. This book is his story. I was surprised at how many things he had tried in life. I had no idea he flew B-17's over 50 missions over Germany in WW2. Or that he spent over 20 yrs. in South American jungles gold mining and oil wildcatting.
He was friends with, and a paid consultant for the chief engineers of GM and Ford, and ran around with people like John DeLorean, Lee Iacocca, Mickey Thompson, and Bill France, Sr. He was right in the middle of the start of NASCAR and built and raced cars there and at Indy. A lot of his idea's shaped and changed automotive technology. He was pretty old when he and his wife wrote it, so he does ramble and repeat himself some. He also does not pull punches or use PC language so it's not a book for kids or those easily offended. I enjoyed it. I will say if 25% of the adventures reported are accurate, he had one hell of a ride.

I wonder how much of the NASCAR rule book is still based on responses to his creative engineering.
