Starship Troopers

Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel, winner of the Hugo award as Best Novel in 1960.

It is much more than a sci-fi horse opera. It reminds me more of Atlas Shrugged than Star Wars. Very deep expositions on politics, society, citizenship, and military duty. It is the only science fiction novel on the reading list at four of the five United States military academies.

I think this will surprise many.

Loved the book. Hated the movie, part of which was filmed a few miles from here. Movie totally missed the point of the book.

Concur on the book. Read it several years ago and it still holds up.

I read several of his books back in my science fiction days. The one that had a "message" was Stranger in a Strange Land.

mark_bert has failed to amuse us
Thoroughly enjoyed the book and had my son read it as well. I have to say that I'm intrigued my his idea of requiring service to gain the vote or hold office. The idea that service implies a inclination to put the good of the collective above personal aspirations holds water with me.

I don't think that was an accident.

It's funny, I usually love Roger Ebert's reviews, in spite of his tilt.

I read his review of this movie last week. He thought it glorified totalitarianism. The only totalitarians I saw were Rico's parasitic parents... threatening to disinherit him if he didnt obey their wishes.

All those cartoony Fascist uniforms were not Heinlein's doing.

And a tactical observation... I loved how our ships were so close together, around the bug planet, they were almost like stacked firewood. So when the bugs launched their fireballs, a weapon we already were aware of, there was NO room for avoidance maneuvers. This particular piece of stupidity especially tickled me.

One of my favorite books...Couldn't begin to tell you how many times I've read it.

Actually I just donated it along with about another 1,000 sci-fi books.

Gonna have to download that into my Kindle.

An attorney I used to work for did his senior English thesis on Robert Heinlein.

Farnham's Freehold was one of my favorites. Also liked Green Hills of Earth.

The concept of having to earn some say-so blew my young mind.
