Welcome to Kandahar
Well, I've been here a month now. I'm doing two jobs: Forward Liaison Officer for my organization back home, and as an Advisor to one of the staff sections of an ANA Corps headquarters.
Thank God for job number two. I would have killed someone if I had been stuck with only doing the first. Main thing that strikes me about dealing with the Afghans first hand - they just want a normal life. They've been in an ongoing state of war for 30 years now. One of the young officers asked a group of senior Afghans and advisors "Why are the Taliban fighting us?" No one could answer, they were stunned that he'd even asked the question. My day-to-day life isn't bad. Decent food, mostly warm showers, a good team to work with. As an American, I'm in the minority. The rest of the team is Australian, UK, and Canadian. Skype has been a lifesaver. Helped me and my fiancee maintain our sanity. Will try and pop in to this ol' funhouse more often now that I've settled in to what passes for a normal routine around here.
