I use the bottom of a ceramic coffee cup to sharpen mine. Is that wrong?

Nope. As long as your angle and stroke are correct.

I have an assorted set of 6 Sabatier Lion knives I bought in 1976. 5 stainless and 1 carbon-steel. My housemate back then borrowed the carbon-steel when he went a friends house and instead of bringing it back he left it there soaking in water
for 2 weeks. Of course it is no longer shiny and I can not make it shiny with steel wool and Flitz. And last year someone in my family used the 6 inch stainless as a pry bar and broke the blade. Some people have no respect.

Picked up a Ken Onion Worksharp, very pleased with results. Time consuming changing belts but really puts a nice edge on. Anytime I sharpen the kitchen knives I tell the wife to be careful and then cut myself.

My son replaced his wife's hunting knife after she tried using her old one to pry apart a joint while field dressing her first elk this fall. New knife was handed over with explicit instructions on appropriate use. She is a good person. She did not immediately stab him with the new knife.

Maybe she needs one made for that appropriate use?
Every time my Henckels 6 inch vegetable knife suffers a broken tip, the other person will never admit how it happened. I work it out of the blade as best as I can, just would like to know how it happened. Found a couple of Wusthoff 6 inch knives, about the same blade pattern, when cleaning out storages over the years, all have the mysterious broken tips... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk

I can just see my dear d-in-law field dressing an elk with an oyster knife. No doubt she'd do it beautifully.
