Homemade ones are where you can control the ingredients to better dried fruit and none of the citron stuff.

Mom never made fruitcake but she did make fruitbread. I was a dark bread, not like pumpernickle but more like a darker whole wheat bread color. Slightly sweet but not over sweet and gooey like fruitcake either but great with a little butter on it.

I never eat fruit cake......I do however like Granny cake, similar with ALOT less fruit.
