Operation: Fatcat

I'm going to try to get the sound under control on the Fatcat. As a bonus, y'all can mock me from afar as I undertake another project.

Let's watch..........

I ordered one of these this morning. Hopefully between the core wrap will keep the packing from burning up and blowing out during extended high-rpm rides.

I'm also taking the headpipe to my powdercoater to have it high-temp ceramic coated. I figure that it can't hurt, and it should help with both the surface rust and the heat. I've brutalized the heat shields all the various times I've had the pipe on and off the bike, so I'm gonna have them done too.

It was a treat taking the baffle screw out of the muffler. As y'all can see, I've ground the dang thing away to nearly nothing. Thank God for vice grips and WD-40. I'll be replacing it with a hex-head so it'll be easier to remove with the vice grips next time.

If I can figure out a way to get the baffle out, I'll have the muffler body coated too (Tim....little help?)

No real mishaps taking the thing apart, except that I dropped one of the front exhaust nuts into the black hole in the front of the bike. After 15 minutes of searching, I admitted defeat. I'll just pick up a new one.

More escapades to be posted as they occur.

Nah, it's not bad.

Truthfully, the biggest issue I have getting the exhaust on and off the bike is Dana's highway pegs. Between the 1" footboard extensions and the peg mounts, that whole apparatus is directly above one of the heat shield screws. I can't remove the footboard with the pipe in place, and I can't re-attach the heat shield with the footboard in place. So the upper shield has to be on the pipe and tightened down when I install the pipe.

I can't take the front cylinder head pipe off without removing the right floor board.

The worst part of the Rinehart is the heat shield fits so damn tight there is really no wiggle room unless its completly removed.

No, but I'll be able to sell a ceramic coated pipe with fresh heat shields and muffler packing.

I've got to remove the footboard and the rear footboard mount. And it's still a snug fit.

Think about drilling another hole for the fastener at 7 o'clock so it won't get ground down.

Did you try to slam the muffler down on a piece of softwood yet?

I'm thinking I may have to drill a hole wherever the baffle ends up when it goes back in.

I thwacked the thing down a couple of times and the baffle didn't budge. It's soaking now, and I'll prolly hit it again before work tomorrow. I'll bring home a 2x2 and try Tim's method. If that doesn't work, I'll take Vader for a ride and burn the shed down.
