tankless water heater
Last year (2006) just before Christmas we started having problems with the water heater .......ARGHHHH, different story ....
So after a lot of research, I decided that we needed a tankless water heater. They cost about 3 times as much a traditional heater, but there's a $300 tax 'CREDIT' for it through 2007, So that helps. Here's the one that I installed .... It only required that I reroute the gas supply line, the water lines and the electric. And that I install the new SS vent system. I got the job done in two days .... never have all the right parts on hand, no matter how well I plan. And the closest store is 8.5 miles away ..... OK, so what you might be interested in ... How do you determine what size you need. You have to figure your GPM demand ... each water facuet calls for about 1.5 GPM, shower is about 2.5 GPM ... so two showers at the same time, kitchen sink going, dishwasher .... and so on .... depending if you have kids and all that .... you should be able to get by for a WHOLE HOUSE on about 7GPM flow rate. Electric ones are mostly out of the question, even though they make them .... running them is expensive, and the wiring requirements are high. As long as you have electric and gas, you NEVER run out of hot water.............. I LOVE THIS THING !!!! It's a bit sensitive for a moment if/when someone else turns on the hot water in another room, but it adjust quickly. Ours is at the far end of the basement from the kitchen. So I got tired of waiting for the hot water to arrive. So a few weeks ago I installed this under the kitchen sink. This is a 4 gal unit, and runs on 110/120v ... easy to install. Took less than an hour ..... well, I did encounter a poopah, which slowed me down a bit It is hooked up in series with the tankless heater ... so you never really run out of hot water in the kitchen either ... but when you turn on the faucet in the kitchen, you have hot water RIGHT NOW !!!!!!! anyone thinking of installing one of these units and would like to ask question, pm me and I'll send ya my phone number and any information that I can get ya

Looked into this when I was living in GA and it was just me in the house. I arrived at the same conclusion about the electric--220V/80A!

with the gas version that I have, it has a modulating burner. so it only turns on the burner has high as it needs to go to heat the water for the demand. Only one faucet, the burner is on low ...... two faucets and a shower, the burner goes on high ....... helps save on the gas bill :-DD

My water heater is from 1973. Never run out of hot water. I have thought abut a tankless. What is the cost? Water heater is around 4-500? At 2-3 times the cost, is the savings there? If it doesn't pay for it self in a couple years, I am not sure. Though energy costs going up.
I think you are going to see alot more energy effeicent devices, and better insulated homes inthe future. Funny 10 years ago gas and electric cost, were barely a thought. Now heating bills are something to think about. |

Also never though it was that big of deal waiting for hot water. Insuaklting lines may help. Also putting in a loop, may help Why put it in series why the main tank? Especially since you said you fill a dip if someone turns the hot water on? Would think would be better to be by itself. If it could keep up, I would seriously think about that. Is all its doing is heating your water for 20 seconds, until the hot water from main tank gets there? That seems like a waste. All in all you need a little paitenace. Its bad when I am saying that. I am curious about the main tank heater though. |

no need for a torch when fittings have threads .... makes it easier should you need to take it apart for repairs .....
just cause it's not sweat fitted, doesn't indicate that I don't know how to use a torch .... I prefer threaded fittings ... jus sayin'

depending on how your space is at that end of the house, you might be able to use a tankless system. They can be mounted on the outside of the house, cause there's no tank, no freezing. However you'd want to ck that real close for where you live. There is always some water left in the heat exchanger ..... Mounting them on the outside of the house saves money... depending on where it would be located inside it could save a LOT of money. If mounted in the house, it has to be vented. Since is is High Efficiency the flue gases are extremely caustic and require type 3 stainless steel .... read that as EXPENSIVE. I was lucky and could mount mine right next to the wall to vent it .... even at that the vent pipe ran me 250 clams !! from what you described, I get this for a demand calc. 4 pc. bath - not sure what this is .... but each faucet draws 1.5 GPM, shower is 2.5 gpm Washer - 1.5 gpm Kitchen sink - 1.5 gpm Dishwasher - 1.5 gpm you might have the dishwasher, washer, and kitchen sink on at the same time ..... 4.5 gpm that bath, if used at the same time could easily drive you up to the 7gpm need. they make this units up into the 10-15 gpm range. The higher the demand, the higher the cost ... you might be better off just installing a traditional tank heater to feed that end of the house.

Why the gas cock above the tee? Kinda redundant, don'tcha' think? Be sure to pipe that relief valve to within 12" of the floor. If that sucker were to blow whilst you were standing next to it, you wouldn't want it blowing at you! Good investment. You should realize a savings in fuel consumption. I would worry about how many fixtures you can run at one time though.

Its a big deal the cloths wsher and dishwasher wait for hot water?
The main tank may be a good idea, not convinced, if you actually know or not. Feels good though. As for piggy backheater uner kitchen sink. I amnot conviced this is worthwhile. None of this has to be worth while. Your house, gives you a warm fuzzy, increases comfort. This is America, and its your house. Last edited by Berserker; 01-18-2008 at 12:08 AM. |

So have you calculated payback? How do you spend in a year? What do you expect to save?
So mant times you gt guys, who swears, something work. But have no clue if it really does. Just feels that way. Ya spent an extra grand or more to put his in, I bet. Whats the payback? I am asking, and poking. Cause I have thought about it myself. My hot water is from 73. I have gotten brochure, but not followed through. |
