Exclamation 'Nother Oil Leak Solved?

I took Orange Crush to see some relatives on Sunday, rode about 75 miles, and pulled up to Mom-in-law's, for a few minutes. Came out and noticed a big ol' oil puddle under the bike. There was oil all over the bike...

Started looking and there was oil dripping from the filter, and at pretty good rate when the motor was running. Since the bike was still pretty warm, I couldn't get to the filter, so I left the bike there and caught a ride home.

I came back Monday with truck, trailer, oil change goodies, including a filter wrench, and a friend to help me load the 800 lb beast. Checked the filter and it was very loose. I tightened it up, stopping the leak and then rode it home.

I called the folks at LA Cycle (in Whitestown, Indiana), who did the last service (2 1/2 years ago) and they told me they had several folks come back with oil leaks due to a series of bad filters where the gasket was not properly seated or loose on the filter side.

I guess I was just lucky to get 4500 miles out of a potentially bad filter.

Moral of the story - check your filter's gasket before you put it on - and make sure the old one is not still stuck to the mount...
