Didn't know what I didn't know
I took an advanced motorcycle course this past weekend and it was a humbling experience. Having ridden motorcycles for almost 20 years I feel that I'm a safe and competent rider. The drills we did in the class proved me wrong. Then again the drills are intended to take you out of your comfort zone. Its been a long time since I went into a parking lot and practiced panic breaking, accident avoidance and things of that nature. Well its safe to say that I will be practicing those things going forward. Luckily the parking lot where the class was taught has the guidelines for the drills painted on the ground so its convenient to practice.
Additionally it introduced me to skills competition. After seeing the instructor run a cone course I'm thinking my next course will be their advanced tight turning course. Stay safe out there!

I'm geographically blessed to have Wayne (Slowhound) close to me. His pearls of wisdom over the years, as well as the humbling example that his riding presents have taught me a bunch.

Wayne is amazing, he worked with me last year while we were in the Pocono's. I'd love to come out and take his riding class at somepoint

In Texas we sometimes ride with Dan and Ken.
It is always a humbling experience. With all due respect, they are the only two that I would ride tandem with and now, with the hack, I ride tandem with myself. With the hack and the aging issue, I am moving more to tail gunner and away from cat herding.

I'm overdue to take the advanced riders course again. It's a good thing to have your skill level pushed in a controlled environment. Riding with Ken and Dan always reminds me that I have a long way to go to be in that upper echelon.

Agreed, after completing the first 6 hour training I feel it would be beneficial to riders of every skill level. After watching the instructors I felt like a novice. My goal is to devote 15-20 minutes each time I ride to practice my slow speed maneuvers. Hopefully gets raises my confidence and riding ability.

I run up to the local dealer on a regular basis to practice that stuff. It's really helped.

I'm still having troubles with tight turns but I am very mildly better than I usedta was.

Did take the ERC out here a couple of years ago. I learned a lot. Had fun, too. Kinda cool to be able to flick a sled around corners now.

They used to have an ERC course here before ABATE pulled out of my city. I've been looking for another offering for it, but have yet to find one close enough for me. Once I do find one, I'll definitely be taking it. Seems very worthwhile.
