The dimensions of the bolt I posted are the standard way of stating bolt specifications. 3/8-16 means that the bolt is 3/8" diameter and has 16 threads per inch of length. 1.25 is the length of the bolt 1and 1/4 inches long. This is considered a course thread bolt. A fine thread bolt would be a 3/8-24, meaning it has 24 threads per inch. Bolts come in different grades of shear and tensile strength. Grade 8 is a very strong bolt, both in shear and tensile. I don't use anything less than grade 8 on my bike. A good torque wrench is very expensive. A Snap-On in the foot pound range for most bike applications will be almost $300. A Snap-On in the inch pound range for all the small stuff on your bike will also be over $200, you need both to cover the torque ranges on an HD. I have been wrenching for years and can get close to the torque values by feel but I still use a torque wrench. There are many Texas d00fs and Gazintas, borrow a torque wrench from one of them.

Don't I remember another wrench napping back in the historical fog?

Looking at Ms T's picture, will a Torque Wrench with a socket on it even fit in there? ...without lifting the tank?

On my Road King, I remove the back tank bolt and console nut but just loosen the two front bolts. That way, the tank can be swung up out of the way (without disconnecting anything) and propped up with something to give you enough room to fit the torque wrench w/socket on it.

ACE Hardware stores always have a very good selection of nuts and bolts and of various grades.
I would start there.

After visiting Home Depot and two auto supply stores I find that 1 1/4 is apparently not a standard size. . .I found 1" and 1 1/2", but no 1 1/4". All the Ace Hardwares in this part of the country are closed on Sunday. I even tried Wally World, but to no avail. I consoled myself with a new microwave which has been out of stock for two months and purple petunias.
I bought the 1" and 1 1/2" and got the blue locktite. Will either of those work? If not I'll try Ace tomorrow and if not there, HD in Midland. The weather is pretty much going to suck for the next week, so no worries. I'll plant my new petunias and heat tea in the microwave. . . ooooh, popcorn! |

I would wait to get the right one. Being that the bolt is going into an aluminum head, the 1" one would have 1/4" less threads to grab (not good), while the 1-1/2" one would probably bottom out. ACE may have quarter sizes,... not sure. Harley dealer is probably the best bet.

See here is where she can get a grinder and a cut off wheel. Cut the 1.5-inch to length. Then she'll need a die set to chase the threads to clean up the cut end. Cleaning up the end can be done with a file too. MORE TOOLS. |

Don't forget a vice to hold the bolt in while cutting it off. Oops, and a workbench to bolt the vice down. She might be able to get someone to hold it in their teeth, though. Hmmmm... there are possiblities here.

I recently bought a foot pound torque wrench ..... it's a clicker
5 to 80 foot pounds picked it up at the competition place to Harbor Freight ... cost, 40 bucks, about half of what Lowes wanted for the Kobalt one, which is the only brand they carry it has a life time warranty ........ if I use it 6 more times in my life it will be A LOT .......... I just don't do that much wrenching .... but when ya need it, ya need it
