I've been through Carbondale. Don't recall much about the town but traffic (I hit it at rush hour) but it is smack dab in the middle of the Rocky Mountains and surrounded by beautiful country.

close to aspen or Glenwood spgs where doc holiday is buried......about 20 mi. great place to live....cold winter....great destination for Dad to ride in the summer.
you can go in over Independence Pass one of the most beautiful passes in the state but it is closes in the winter.
