Shoppin' for new cams for the 'b'
Why?
Something failed in the cam chest, either oil pump or hydro tensioner. As a result, stuff passed through the engine. Most of the guts of the motor (oil pump, cam plate bearings, cams, lifters, pistons, cylinder walls) are junk now. Fancy welded crank has issues as well. Darkhorse will be consulted tomorrow. Fancy case Timkens will be replaced. Jugs aren't hurt enough to toss, .010 overbore will clean those up. If not, new jugs will be ordered. Heads will be gone through, again. New valves and valve guides for sure. Springs are OK. Fancy SE cam plate appears to be OK. Weird as oil pressure and oil temps were perfect. Only difference was excessive ticking in the cam chest the last week or so. I thought sticky lifter. Disassembly proved otherwise. One tensioner shoe was found to be cocked and jammed in it's holder. Took some effort on the tech's part to free it up. Dunno why it was found that way. Worse yet, motor only had 15K miles on it in the three years since the last rebuild. Motor was never abused, meticulously maintained. Cost a small fortune to fix the scissored crank/Timken case mod/95" build the last time. Gonna cost more this time, especially if the crank is found to be scrap. And I'm thinkin' those hydro tensioners are going bye bye. Gear drive may very well be the new norm. Happiness in my part of the world, for sure.

Yep.
Thanks. Leanin' toward the Andrews 37G. A bit more compression, due to the overbore/SE flattop piston combo and new Cometic .030 head gaskets should work well with the 37Gs. Gear drives will add a few sheckles to the cost, but I'm in so deep, WTH, right? Will consult with engine tech Tuesday to see what he says. And I'll know more about the crankshaft situation by then, too. Same tech did the last tune on it. Motor never ran better. Had power and great fuel economy. He knows stuff.

Hard to argue with the 37. And if your runout will support gears, do them.

What about a pullout motor. Their should be lots of low millage motors replaced with big bore builds, eh
And then have you considered the new 120ST motor from the moco? BOB

Man, that really does suck. But on the bright side you get to build a new motor to your liking
It's a pirates life for me

This.. And THIS too. Oh, I know where there's a 145 build not mounted in a bike. It's not stock either.

Running Andrews 37G cam, SBC heads, in my 2003 Fatboy, runs like a champ, no mechanical issues whatsoever. The cams make a whirring noise, not bothersome, but different. Do it.

update
Waiting to hear from Darkhorse re: the crank.
Tech came up with an interesting engine combo: cast SE .010 over 10.25 pistons, Andrews TW54 gear drive cams, .030 Cometic head gaskets, Feuling lifters. Heads had been ported the last time it was apart. I've been assured that this set up will not require compression releases. I have interwebs research to do........ And the parts list gets longer and more spendy. Seems the fancy SE cam plate is junk, too. Looks like the ol' 95 is gonna be a 96 or 97 now and a little, um, more peppier, too.

Sorta.
That made me laugh. But not quite like this....... Crank update: Done repaired and on it's way home. Darkhorse disassembled it and were able to save it. New rod bearings, new crank pin, repaired outer bearing race, repaired something else I forgot, re-balanced, re-trued, re-welded, re pro-plugged, re-warranteed. In and out in less than a week. Getting gear drive cams for sure now.

I inquired after the B when I picked up Buelah. Jeff was still waiting on Darkhorse. Glad it was a save.
