If you have to give notice in three weeks because a better opportunity arises, then you have to give notice in three weeks. It will perhaps be inconvenient for the employer but not unheard of and they'll manage. If for some reason your employment with them did not work out on their end, they would let you go and probably lose little sleep over it. If it makes you feel better, you could offer to stay at a salary comparable to the one at the more appealing job. I have had employees resign under the conditions you describe, and while I wasn't too happy about returning to interviewing and training people, it didn't kill me.

One thing I've learned over the course of my career is that YOU have to look out for YOU. Companies don't care about you. It sounds cliche, but it's true. There are exceptions, but generally the bigger the company the less they care. My advice is go for it and don't look back. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

Corporate/Company loyalty towards the employee no longer exists. They will under fund your retirement accounts, eliminate your job, move it overseas or across the border, and let you go to hire someone younger and cheaper.
Your likely not the first person to leave on short notice after being a new hire, and probably won't be the last either. In the end, you have to decide what's best for your and your family. If you can work out the interview issue and are offered the position, don't feel you owe them anything should you leave. It may be better to leave now before they invest more time and energy in any training you may require. Good luck Keith

Thanks guys. I'm gonna try like hell to get that position. Hopefully we can work something out to get in there and do an interview. Then, if I don't get it, I'll never regret not at least trying. And the position I start on Monday is going to be much more interesting than the one I've had for the last 14 years. So, no matter what happens, I'll be better off.
I'll keep you guys informed.

What Mike said. In all my career when someone wanted advice about opportunities like this, even employees I considered "irreplaceable" my advice was always: "Do what's right for your family".
You can't go wrong. As mentioned, loyalty and devotion are no longer rewarded. Best of luck!

Thank you all for the good advice to Keith. My daughter has had a similar situation in the past so I sent her all your good advice.

Had my interview with the other potential job yesterday. I think it went pretty well. They are supposed to let me know something next week. They are hiring 4 people.
The job duties are right up my ally. A lot of landscaping, tree care, construction, snow plowing, sewer maintenance, and other hands on work that I enjoy doing. And the pay will get me back to making about what I was making throwing garbage. But I will be giving up a weeks vacation for the next 5 years (which I think I can make up in comp time), and losing all of my sick time. So basically starting over in the benefits department. The drive is also about an hour each way. The drive itself doesn't bother me. I like to drive. But the buying of gas and junking cars every 4 years concerns me. Still thinking about it.

Between comp time and OT, I always took the comp time.
Sounds great.

What happens in bad weather, will you be working? If so, then that 1 hour each way is going to suck.

Yes. Will be plowing snow. So will have to make the drive in bad weather. Most of the drive is 4 lane highway that is kept up pretty well. And there is no time limit to get there after being called in. But yes, I have taken that into consideration. It's a tough decision.

Tell them to let you bring the snow plow home with you. Problem solved!
