Filter trivia

A well known reusable filter maker uses SS cloth, and claims "superior ASTM F316" filtering performance.

ASTM F316 doesn't filter anything. It blows air through and makes bubbles. No oil or test dust is used.

Also, Para 5.3 of said ASTM F316 says, in part that the test Sjould not be used as the sole basis for ....

Essentially, it is a part of a puzzle and not an end all and be all determination of filtering ability. Close reading shows that it is probably only useful as a screening tool.

Also, been researching actual values for filters.

Anyone wanna buy the K&N I impulse bought?
Some useful info.

Still working on fleshing it out and all sources are not factory, yet.

K&N - 97% @15 microns
Wix Working it
Bosch - No listing
Mobil1 99.2% @ ????
Amsoil Ea 98.7 @ 15 see below
PureOne 99.9 @ 20 NOT recommended for motorcycles - see below
Purolator ML 97.5@20 see below
Fram Extra gard 95% @ 20

HD 5 Nominal (50%)

K&P 35 (Based on screen size)

Working on filling in the blanks and arriving at an intelligent decision.

Meanwhile, only a few are able to supply a range of values.

Amsoil
50%@7
87.7@15
99.8@20

Pure One
50%@5
99.2@15
99.9@20

Purolator ML
71%@10
97.5@20

Updates as I know more, right now, I'm torn. Run a Mobil1 or try a PureOne and see what happens to oil pressure. they indicate that motorcycles may not have enough pump for it.

Don't mind the $8 so much as the effort and mess.

Seeing as the post contains the following line:

I'm guessing it's oil filters.

I don't think I understand so when you get it figured out and can write it in plain English, let me know what to buy.

Hi all.

I did allot of research into filters a few years back, so I will share what I found.
Almost across the board, the aftermarket twin cam listed filter (Oil filters) were all in the 28-20 micron range with by-pass valves set in the 15-20 psi range.

the Harley super 5 is made for Harley by Champion laboratory (Champ) it uses a low restriction synthetic filter media and will filter to 5 microns. But more importantly, the by pass valve is set at 60 psi.
This is to make sure the oil gets filtered, as 20/50 when cold can by-pass instead of filter.
I talked with the engineers at many of the companies that make filter including K&N, they were shocked to hear that Harley's filter was now a 5 micron.
The original specs for the twin cam filter was the same as the EVO and Sportster engines, 30 micron, but this lead to many cam plate failures and the early failures the twin cam was plagued with.

As for my bike, it only gets a Harley super 5, until there is a filter shown to be better.

My intent is to make this a living document. I don't own any stock in any of these and I am a professional oil dude.

You will get the best data I can come up with and my honest opinion about it.

Anecdotes are not data. I don't care if granddad did it that way. I know a lot of people do stuff that makes my stomach and have no perceived ill effects. None of that will be taken into consideration.

This is a about reliable data, as reliable as I can find or wheedle out of people. And yes, I will go check standards you test to.

I will translate into English when I have more to go on. Heck, I might even make it pretty if I can figure out how....

Meanwhile, I have a K&N I will not be using.

And Jeffytune, Thanks, I'm after that "shown to be better" too.
