I've heard that same thing about bike helmets: http://www.eastcoastmarc.org/art_helmetlife.htm Not to be a skeptic but I think the last paragraph says a mouthfull. |

Your head, your choice; glad you chose wisely.
Snell Memorial Foundation says 5 yrs. for a helmet without an impact. Don't leave it where it can fall, don't perch it on a mirror. If it hits the ground, inspect it carefully. Chip in the outer shell will negatively affect the helmet's ability to absorb and distribute the next impact. I had a "debate" with a student in an MSF BRC early last season over helmet life. She said her 5 year old Arai must still be good, because it cost so much. One month later she e-mailed to say the helmet had started to visibly detiorate. 'nuff said.

I got a motorcross helmet still new in the box, 4 years old. I always wonder about this. It just seems like 5 years isn't that long of time, stuff that hasn't been impacted should not be degrading. You got to wonder if its on purpose.

Mandatory down here but even if it wasn't i would still wear one. I know some helmets can make your noggin' look like a bobblehead but what would it look like when it hits the pavement? Always wore an open face but i've been checking out full face helmets recently.
I remember when i got my bike license, at the course someone asked "how much should i spend on a helmet?". The instructor said "if you got a 50 buck head buy a 50 buck helmet, if you think your heads worth a little more then buy the best you can afford."

I've posted this link before, but it's still the most comprehensive work done to date. Don't let the length scare you off, it's really informative.
http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/ge...iew/index.html And it disproves the "expensive is better" train of thought. SNELL M2010 helmets should be hitting the shelves soon, the new standard is going to be much different and more in line with the Euro standards allowing a softer shell. |

Great article, best I've read...thanks for posting it again.
Couple things: "Some prizefighters can take huge hits again and again and not seem to suffer any ill effects other than a tendency to sell hamburger cookers on late-night TV". #2: Some people in the study, those involved in truly awful, bone-crushing, aorta-popping crashes, did sustain potentially fatal head injuries even though they were wearing helmets. The problem was that they also had, on average, three other injuries that would have killed them if the head injury hadn't. I have a good friend who is a lieutenant and EMT in one of the local fire departments, been there for most of a decade. He is also a rider. He asserts that the vast majority of motorcycle fatalities are multiple-injury type fatalities. IOW, having a helmet on probably wouldn't have helped a lot. I'm not saying the wearing isn't a good idea or advocating such; just that this is his observation. I think helmets do a huge amount of good in low to medium speed/impact wrecks and surely don't hurt in the big ones. A note of interest; I worked at the local ski area for quite a number of years. Saw a couple fatalities and many, many injuries. One of the very worst I witnessed and assisted on happened this way. Was riding up the lower lift to ski rounds for scheduling work and witnessed a fiftyish lady poking down an access road to a lift base. And by poking I mean nearly walking. And she just, for whatever reason, fell over...plop. Almost immediately the snow was red. I got on the radio and got patrolmen headed her way. I was less than three minutes getting there, tow others much sooner. Multiple compound fracture of the femur and severe bleeding. She nearly died. You don't have to be going Mach III with your hair on fire to sustain a life-threatening injury. It just has to happen right. |

IMHO probably not as much as a helmet that was "in service" for the same lifespan. Interesting debates.......always was-always will be

As for the motorcross helmet, its not that I don't wear it, I just never did all the riding I planned on doing.
With all the fancy stuff now a days, why can't they make a helmet, that last longer? I suppose you would not need to buy another one, as often. Maybe I am a cynic. I was thinking about they cause my snowmobile helmet is 6 years old. I wore a crappy one for awhile, until a buddy said to get a good one. Now I need another one?? Give the old one to the gf to wear? |

Ya, I plan on wearing it. Actually I wore it once last week, when I climbed up on my barn to change the light.
It has been in the garage for couple years, in heat, and basement, which is damp at times. You could argue those aren't best place. I wanted it in the garage, so its readily avaible, so I would grab it. Its for my 4 wheeler which I mostly just plow with and around yard, occasional trip to the bar. |
