Zylstra H-D Ames, Iowa

Outstanding customer service for a rider passing thru town.

Inner primary bearing had been on a fast downward slope. Went from no noise to the famous bearing grind sound in just a few hundred miles. Actually I was surprised how fast and how noisy.

Stopped in on Zylstra's at 8:30 Saturday morning. They open at 9 but their top tech came out and started talking to me at 8:45. Quick diagnoses completed we promptly fell into a Harley mechanic to Cadillac mechanic conversation.

The decision was made to leave it because all the needed parts were not in stock as they were used the day before on the same repair. I also did not want to keep running the bike because of the fine metal from the failed bearing rollers turns the oil into cutting fluid and can damage other parts quickly. Seen it in Cadillac differentials way too often.

I needed to rent a bike or car to get 300 more miles home. Their bikes were all rented out. The service manager called EVERY car rental outlet and car dealership in town looking for a car. There were none in town to be had. He found out there are a few available the Des Moines airport, 50 miles away. I had noticed he called the shop man to the desk, gave him the key to the shop truck and told him to go fill the gas tank. When he came back, Gary the service manager said they are taking me to the airport so I could get a car. WOW!

The shop man, John wouldn't even take a tip for going above and beyond. He even helped me carry my stuff into the car rental area and stayed to make sure I actually secured a rental.

What a great example of old school Harley-Davidson rider culture and Iowa hospitality.

They are one of the last small dealers in the old one story metal buildings.

The shop is about the size of most new dealers customer waiting lounges.

The whole dealer is about the size of the Motor Clothes section of the new mega dealers.

That's right. Billy's bike was making the same noise. I forgot about that. I overheard y'alls conversation and I was thinking to myself that I was glad mine was quiet.

Zylstra H-D Ames, Iowa

DJ, ya should have called me!
Could've hung out, had dinner, recoup. What really sucks is, I was in Ames while all this was going down and didn't even know it. I had lunch at Perkins and, on the way home, went right past Zylstras.
You gotta come back here to get the bike anyway, you could have grabbed my car and drove it home, returned it whenever they get done with the bike. Would have worked out great.
It ain't no caddy, but is real nice

Thanks, Matt. I was out of town by noon. I was thinking of ya but I wanted to just get back home after a week on the road.

Meet me at the dealer next Saturday morning.

Sorry to hear about the problem on the road but glad to hear about it happening close to a dealer that understands the meaning of "customer service".

I dropped the rental car off here in Chicago with no penalty. Cheers to Enterprise Rental Car.

Hooked the trailer up to the truck and went out to pick up the bike this morning. 12 hour round trip, 660 miles. Glad I decided to trailer it back as the mid-west rain was working all day again. Lot of swollen rivers and standing water in the fields. Iowa is swamped.

When I left it there I told the tech to fix as if it was his own bike and you don't want to pull the primary down again. That is why they made a worse case estimate and I agreed to the amount. The dealer called Thursday to say the bike was ready. The bill was $300 less than the worst case estimate. They easily could have just done it per estimate but only fixed what he felt was needed. WOW!

The bike was washed and I swear the kid waxed it too.

The tech, Ryan gave the old parts. Explained everything and said thank you for your business. WOW!

Needless to say I hooked Ryan up with a case of Wisconsin's Leinenkugel beer and the service manager, Gary, with a twelve pack of Wisconsin's Point Lager beer.

Thanks to Zylstra H-D.

Old school business practices at it's best!
