As I am doing the move to the new place in stages, I was in need of a tow vehicle.

In the past we owned a 2005 Tundra Crew Cab, and was hoping to find a real clean one of that model, but alas, is hard to find one easily being the remoteness of the PRK residence.

So I started looking for a 2007 up version, came across a used 2017 that was Toyota certified, looks like it was some kind of fleet vehicle, white and steel wheels, cab and a half (used to call that an access cab).

Drove it today with my utility trailer in tow, this thing is a beast, runs at the posted speeds of 75 - 80, but boy oh boy it is a thirsty beast.
So just rolling along between 70, sometimes 75 and it is drinking less at 12 - 13 MPG, about what the 4Runner does MPG wise, but less down shifting and V six engine screaming sounds.

It is so much huger than the 2005, when I parked it tonight was walking back into the motel and walked past a new Ford Super Duty and that beast dwarfed the Tundra.

Yeah, the larger engine does suck some fuel when under a load. I would think it could/should get 15-17 MPG at 55-60 MPH, but who can drive that slow
IDK but someone may make a tuner for it

I have a beast truck. 2006 Silverado with 6.6 Duramax (LBZ)turbo diesel and Allison transmission. I get 13-14 mpg around town with lots of stoplights. On the highway at 55-60, I average around 19 mpg. On interstate at 70, average is 17.5-18.5. Empty this is 7700 lb., 1 ton extended cab, dual rear wheels. Haul or pull just about anything I need, including tree debris to the landfill, or 8000 lb. concession trailer and still get 11 mpg at 65-70 mph. 150k miles too. Many times thought about downsizing and quickly realized what I'd be giving up. Having no payments is also good, and no DEF needed.

I bought a Colorado. Don't need a massive truck anymore, so I downsized. In DC area traffic I average 20mpg, it's quick enough for me, can pull 7,000 pounds, and it'll haul a bike in the bed without breaking a sweat. Not once have I missed a full-sized truck.

I’m śure your mpg will improve when you’re not hauling a trailer.

I’m probably going to buy my final truck when the house sells. I currently have a Ram 3500 (1 ton) but have Single rear wheels, 6.7 Cummins Turbo Diesel. If I drive 55-60 on the highway I can get low to mid 20’s for mileage. Of course I never do that.

So about the second day in Thermopolis, I finally drag out the RTFOM and start reading it when it comes to using this conveyance for towing a trailer.

One section basically says that the truck was designed for a passenger vehicle only, and not as a tow vehicle. (wut the flip?)

Other sections suggest to select, either S-4 for towing, on another page it says to use the "Towing button" on the end of the shift stalk.
Well which is it?

Think on the return to the PRK, I'll try it in standard "D" as I am only towing an enclosed utility 6' X 12' trailer and not a 25' travel trailer, and see what the results turn out to be.

We've been looking at the new Ranger when we do our final move. Equipped properly it will tow just north of 7K. For anything bigger I will still have the dually, and it doesn't care much whats behind it.....LOL.

Sounds a lot like my 16 Tacoma with a bigger motor.

Leaving it in drive was like a 5 YO with a pocket full of penny's in a penny candy store.

It kept hunting for the right gear (candy) up, down, up, no down, now up.

So Tow/ Haul it is.

Other than the extended lower gear down shift hold from the last upgrade, while you are now downgrade.

Tow/Haul works the best.
