Mileage vs Speed?

I know this has been beaten to death, but since I get crappy mileage with my mik 42, I am starting to wonder is it because I ride between 70-80 on the highway most of the time?

guess that would depend on your mods, and what you consider crappy...

My 04 Dyna with pipes, AC, stock carb rejetted gets 42-44mpg at those speeds... if I keep it around 55-60 mileage jumps up to 50 mpg or better no problem.

I would consider crappy anything much less than 40mpg... for what it's worth...

75 MPH into a30 MPH wind got around 38 MPG today, I thought that was crappy after the first tank at 75 MPH with a 30 MPH tail wind I got almost 47 MPG, thats the best I ever did was on that first tank this morning.

A long trip (say over 500 miles) to get a good overall difference of driving conditions ....

but depending on how you drive (I can still do 80-90 and still get 45 to 48) and the weather conditions but an average is a better way to tell...

If I go below 40 I am looking for the reason.....and my builds are fairly aggressive....

You are on the wrong side of that setup by at least 10mpg.....

you can look at your plugs and I would bet that they are pitch black....

wow you have got to be competing with Chromer for who can leave the biggest puddle of fuel behind them....

see that's the problem, the plugs are pretty much perfect, more on the lean side than rich, when I got it tuned the afr was right in line? I found my choke was slightly out at full in pos. last year and fixed that? so whats next?

I think that properly running carbs have a little over the FI bikes, but not in performance. I would guess that they are a little lean in certain parts of thier maps.

I found this on mikuni's web site:

POOR FUEL ECONOMY:
(Mikuni HSR carbs normally deliver
fuel economy very close to that of a
stock Harley.)
Possible causes:
1. The choke cable must be fully
bottomed in the metal elbow (at carburetor
end). There must be some
perceptible free-play in the choke
knob.
2. Current stock Harley tank vents do
not allow gasses to leave the tank
and pressure may develop from
engine heat. Open the vent to allow
two-way air flow.
3. An incorrect jet needle or pilot
jet for a particular tuning set-up or
altitude can reduce fuel mileage.
The speed range in which mileage
is usually recorded is controlled by
the jet needle and pilot jet.
4. Loose pilot or main

So I went out to the garage and rechecked my choke knob (he said knob-hehe) and it was out a bit even though I remember pushing it in, so I readjusted that.

But that leads me to #2 not sure about that whole venting thing as it relates to mileage but how do I open it?

I know the jets are tight because the second to last time I changed them the pilot jet was loose-no it fell out! it made for a long trip to work.

thanks again

ok I couldn't stand it anymore with the price of gas @ 399 for hi test, and seeing only 55 miles @ half tank, I decided I need to pull the carb off and see whats what.

so.....

160 main
50 accel
25 pilot

didn't pull the top based on the mik manual saying that cruising is mostly pilot jet.

So I went searching through the tool box and remembered that last year I could not find a 22.5 jet like everyone recommends but I found a 20 and the bike ran kinda crappy, but since I a real fart smeller I figure now I have an IST ignition and it should help deal with it. So thats what I put in the bike.

Now the bad part-the stupid o-ring around the accelerator jet ripped and nobody has one, I cut up the smallest one I could find and shoved that thing in then backed the pump off so it avoids that circuit.

So if anyone reading this post has access to jets and orings please pm me so I can get this thing sorted out correctly.

whew!

Had a 42 on my Sporty (XL1200) and if I was running highway speeds it was tough to pass a gas station.
