My computer guru has a smart car that he uses for short dashes around town- says he saves a ton on gas and it is easy to fit in tiny parking places.

THe biggest advantage I can see is that no one would ever expect you to drive for the grade school field trips.

That scion is 15 k before you start adding options and only gets 35mpg roughly. So I still think the question is why? You can buy a nicely optioned deisel golf, which is much bigger, has four seats and a really big trunk, and gets 50 mpg. I don t get the trend at all.

The Malibu I recently sold had room for two of those inside, six airbags, super comfy ride, a big V6 with lots of power and consistently got 33mpg. Why the heck would anyone buy the Smart car?

The thinking is that urbanites will flock to something small like that, as microcars are good for big-city traffic and congestion. I can't imagine driving something that small on the highway.
