Spark Testing; Short Video
I was in a discussion on the interwebs about ECM stuff and the point was brought up about testing for spark with the plugs out. I made this little video to clarify my mind

I saw the front one spark just at the end of the first cranking test.
Is that bar between the plugs grounded good enough on top of that rubber mounted cowbell horn bracket? I know a service writer who can test the coil Kv output by leaning his junk against the fender and while reaching towards something on the engine he brushes up against the leaking coil wire.  Don't hurt your new neck bones Ricky...

Yeah the spark happened as the start button was released. Not uncommon with various electronic ignitions to get a coil discharge at interrupt.....but I'm still scratching my head a bit on why it would happen with THIS system in this situation.

Now try to understand how they measure the amount of Kv spark required to jump the gap, as a "knock" sensor, on how they control timing to control knock...
You're gonna be on report if you don't take it easy, the powers that be will find out somehow someway... Not from me...

Knock sensors (old style) piezo-quartz.
Someone discovered that if you vibrate (strike) a quartz crystal that it generates electricity. They measure the impulse of current, them retard the timing. They also found that if you turn the mess around (supply electricity to the quartz) that the quartz would vibrate. Because this vibration occurs always at the same frequency, they use this to make clocks accurate. Pretty damned spiffy little rocks.
