Touring Frame Alignment
In another post I asked about adjusting the rear wheel alignment. I incorrectly thought alignment of the rear wheel could be done at the rear axle.
The only adjustment at the axle is belt tension on a touring frame. Joe suggested using the glide pro method for complete vehicle alignment. After watching the 40 minute video that could have been edited down to 10 if you cut out all the extra gibberish, I know understand the concept. 1. Remove seat 2. Use a scissor jack with a flat rail wide enough to support both frame rails, lift the rear wheel leaving some weight on the front wheel. 3. Use a torpedo level or digital level to level the bike at the frame rails under the seat 4. With the bike level, check the rear caliper for plumb. Adjust engine link under tank as needed to plumb rear caliper to level frame. That completes the vehicle vertical alignment. Leave level on frame rails and maintain level at frame rails. 1. With a level on the front caliper move handle bars until caliper is plumb. 2. Attach lasers to front and rear calipers, spacers may be required to clear the jack holding up the rear of the bike. 3. While maintaining a plumb front caliper and level frame, check laser lines on floor for parallel. 4. Loosen front motor mount to engine bolts and adjust front motor link until lines are parallel if needed. 5. Tighten front motor mount bolts and jamb nuts on motor links This completes the vehicle horizontal alignment. Stay tuned. I'll get to this soon and try to post up pics if ya want them. |

On my 07 RK I had to grind the rear axle right cam about 1/32" to get the rear wheel to align with the front wheel. And that was after the alignment of the engine. Tires lasted a long time after that adjustment.

Didn't have lasers for horizontal alignment Used a straight edge and i'm confident front and rear are parallel now. Had to lengthen the front motor link. The 2002 frame with MT90 tires front and rear have the front wheel offset about 3/8-inch to the left of the rear wheel. Short test ride in a moderate drizzle confirms things have changed for the good. Need more time in the saddle to gauge how much.
