We didn't break 30 here today, and the wind was blowing 35mph.
It freaking sucked.

I'd love a dual-sport. Been wanting one for years, but had other financial priorities. This year I should be able to pay a few loans off and get ahead.

I would love to do that someday. I need to get a lot better in the dirt first.

Their is no preparation that can ready one for running the TAT, other than just being healthy. Those two blokes we met at ES14 from across the big pond had all kinds of difficulties in their quest. I've never heard of anyone having so many flats. I bet they fixed hundreds before they got all the way across. Not to mention the real breakdowns and repairs.
Their most memorable feature of their trip was almost running into a bear coming from Oark on the Mulberry Did anyone else follow them on the TAT Trail blogspot? aka

Picked it up today and brought it home. Piece of cake to load in the truck.
If you're looking to sample the finest engineering from 1987, this is your bike. It's like a damn time machine. For not a lot of bike, it's reasonable heavy (430 pounds or so). The 6 gallon gas tank is made of steel, yet the fairing, fenders, and side covers are plastic. There's metal bars and tubes everywhere holding stuff together. It's carb'd (of course) and only has 5 forward gears. There's a huge temperature gauge (without actual temperatures) that takes up 1/3 of the gauge cluster, but there's no gas gauge. There's one turn signal indicator. Oil capacity is two quarts, and the filter is not a cartridge - it's reusable. The seat is surprisingly comfy, though at 35" off the ground, it's a reach to the pavement. The rider's triangle is spectacular; could be the most comfortable I've ever been on any bike. Pull the choke, hit the starter, and the bike starts almost like its injected. It settles into an idle that's oddly reminiscent of some of the better brands of leaf blowers. The cable clutch and throttle feel pretty good. The shifter is vague....To the point where gear selection is more like gear suggestion. The brakes are sufficient, but nothing to write home about. The fork rake is shallow, so the bike turns quickly.....Really, really quickly. Acceleration is about what you'd expect from a 650 thumper making 35 horsepower dragging around 640 pounds of bike and rider.....The caveat being that the break-in doesn't allow more than 4,000rpm for the first 500 miles. Who knows, maybe it punches above its weight class at 6,000? It was only 25 degrees out so I only rode about 30 miles. Did about 10 on hardpack and gravel. The bike handles off-road beautifully. I haven't been nearly as comfortable off-road since I was a kid on a TL125. The short windshield doesn't do well at keeping the wind and the cold off of my torso and helmet, so a Madstad is coming. But the bike's stable at 55, and the large tank does a good job of keeping the wind off my legs. I'm really looking forward to getting the tires scrubbed and the motor run in so I can let this sucker rip. I'm liking this bike quite a bit. I've decided to name it "The Goat".

Don't forget to stop by 7-Eleven and steal a milk crate for top box duty.
