Filling butane torch lighters. This is what I was doing wrong...

OK, I recently gave up and threw 2 of these away when Russ and I were cleaning out the shop because they weren't working right after a few refills. I figured they were just crap. Turns out that I should have considered the more likely scenario wherein I am a dumbass.

Apparently, the Ronson and other regular butanes are intended for the "soft flame" lighters, the ones with a little flame not much different than a Zippo. With the torch (or jet) lighters, the plumbing is different, obviously, and they have small orifices that the impurities in "regular" butane will clog, so premium (or "triple refined") butane is actually required, not just a gimmick to get your money (like Screamin' Eagle depleted uranium spark plugs). Also, I had never heard or read in any instructions that the fuel tank in the lighter needed to be purged periodically.

Huh. I did not know about the complete purging. I was aware that cheap butane is pretty dirty. In fact, Hank Hill says it's a bastard gas.
