Anyone familiar with North Carolina?
My daughter and son-in-law are planning on relocating and are heading out next weekend to look at property around New Bern, Jacksonville, and Raleigh. Any caveats for buying houses and land? "Don't buy a place built over a copperhead den" did not endear me to her, but I was just trying to help.

I haven't been on here for ages, but Scabby called me and said you needed info on NC. I've lived in the central part of the State for 50+ years and am a retired LEO from Greensboro. How can I help?

I've never been there. Oddly enough, North Carolina is one of the two states my daughter didn't manage to visit before her 26th birthday, the other being Alaska. She used to climb on a plane every time she could afford a ticket and get a three day weekend off. She went to Thailand by herself when she was 25.

I just saw this. I see Highmiles answered you so I am sure you got plenty-o-information. I've only been here for 25 years.

Dang, Fred, I didn't even think about you being there. I need to read avatar info more carefully. They just made an offer on a place in Maysville. They looked at several places around Raleigh and Greensboro but said they were over city life.

Maysville is definitely a rural area. Tell them to check the elevation of the lot, the higher the better. Hurricanes can be a real bummer.
NC is 500 miles wide so it will take some time to get to the scenic mountains. Copperheads are not an aggressive snake but you still don't want to step on one. The hospitals all stock anti-venom but in their location it may take an hour to get to one. Do they have jobs lined up?

The woman who lives in the house next door to the one they are buying said in the last big hurricane, no one in the area had much, if any, damage.
I suspect they'll live there a year or two to experience life Back East, then return to the west. No copperheads in this part of the country, just prairie rattlers, but you don't want to step on one of them either. "Feet and hands off" is generally a good policy with pit vipers.
