Melted battery terminal
I have a co-worker/friend with a 2002 Ultra. It's been sitting in the garage because of winter. Saturday, he rolled her outside, and tried to fire her up. No go. The ignition came on, and it did the self test, but didn't crank. She got a new battery last spring, and had been on a maintainer. Further investigation revealed the negative terminal was melted. My suspicion was a bad connection, until I realized it had been parked. We are wondering about the maintainer, but don't know. Personally, I'd like to blame the shark nose she wears, but I can't make a connection there. Does anyone have any ideas?

Are those little pieces melted battery block. I'm sorry for her. Shark nose included. It might have been destroyed by whomever hooked it up. It's a hard call to make from here, and likely no recourse either.
I've never used a maintainer, but I wouldn't think it could cause this. $0.02 BOB

Yep, loose / not tight connections will increase heat build up of the connection and it will fail. Burn / melt or other heat failures.

The few times my battery has come loose over the years, all it did to me was cause the lighting on the dash to blink, and maybe a stumble upon acceleration. I pick up on it really quick however. Now day's I pull the seat and check the connection every six months or so. I've found it not as tight as I would like, but not loose since I added checking to my routine.

Clearly a bad connection. I'd check the radiator bearing since you've torn it down that far.
