Mounted my own tires
With that out of the way.... I decided to take care of my own tires on the KLR. Tires for that bike are dirt cheap (a pair starts at about $100 shipped), and I'm not terribly concerned about scratching up the wheels. So with some judicious shopping at Amazon and Revzilla, I dropped about $300 on a tire stand, a couple pairs of spoons, and various bits and pieces to facilitate the process. Start to finish for the rear tire (putting the bike on the lift to washing my hands) took 2-1/2 hours. Next time it'll be an hour. Really not a lot to it. I bought most of the Motion Pro tools (spoons, bead breaker, valve stem fish, etc), and they really made the job pretty simple. The key was to liberally spray the tires and the tube with Windex to keep everything from binding. I don't know that I'd try to do one of the ultra low profile tires on the Beemer (thanks Boss), but I'll be doing my own tires on Vader and The Goat from here on out.

I have a set of English made tire spoons from circa 1975 , somewhere.
I've heard a 120 Lb size gear lube barrel with some slit heater hose on the edge of the open end of the barrel makes a great tire changing stand.

RuGlyde works better than Windex; doesn't dry quite as fast.
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...0411&ppt=C0139 I put it in a Windex bottle, though.

Simple Green will also give extended slickness over Windex. And the minty bouquet will provide an aromatic zenlike experience as your positive thoughts gently coax the bead over the rim.

Good on you Russ. As many tires as I burn through a year, I should have already been changing my own. I've got everything shopped out except for the stand. I need something I can bolt to the floor and feel good about hanging on. Some of these 16" tires can be tough. RuGlide is the industry standard, and I have used it irregularly since the early seventies. Git ya some!

Been doing bike tires for a few years. Usually 2-4 per year.
RuGlyde is a lifesaver. Murphy's oil soap also works in a pinch. I also picked up a Cheetah CH-5 bead seater. It saves a lot of work.

Nice! About the same $$ as taiking it to the shop, but took less time I'm sure

Looks like I need to get me some RuGlyde.
I figure if I do 6 more tires, everything's paid for. Even if I never break even on $$, it still saves the hassle of having to schlep to a shop to have it done.

Balancing..... wasn't mentioned. What's your plan for this?
Having in the old days done all my own tires on various Yamakawazukis, when I later took up riding again, I couldn't believe what the dealers charged. I did the RK's tires myself a couple of times (without the proper tools) but after all the work I still had to pay someone stupid-prices to balance them. I later discovered a local wrench who will mount/balance whatever I carry in for 20 bux. I decided against fighting it after that.

I have a static balancer. The Barnes salesman at work blessed me with a 10# box of stick on weights.
Balanceing takes longer than it does to r&r the tire.

I have a close in town shop do the same thing for $ 26.00. Drop it off in the morning and pick it up on the way home. Or, have Sleeveless take it in.
