2012 Doofapalooza

May I suggest Poncha Springs, Colorado?

It's nestled in a valley, surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, so the riding should be great. It's a helluva long trip for the East Coast guys, easy for the Texans and Californians, and reasonable for the Indy/Chicagoland fellers.

Colorado's not a lid state for those who care.

Thoughts?

We would love Colorado, but getting enough time to go out and back may be an issue with Mike's job. Do you know if there is a harley dealer for rentals close by?

Eagle Rider rentals in Denver and Colorado Springs. I use them rather than the dealers, bikes are a bit older but the rates are much better.

I checked the historical data on the weather there in June and it is usually mid seventies. If we did it the week of 4th of July, people would not have to take so much time off and the weather would be in the mid 80's. Just a suggestion.

Lots more people on the roads around July 4th, and higher hotel occupancy/rates.....

I concur. I think we're better off sticking to the week we've got.

From my place it's either 3 600-mile days or 2 900-mile days to get there. Given the 10 day schedule I've taken off the last two years, that puts me there Sunday night and has me leaving Friday morning, leaving me 4 solid days out there.

I'm not married to this particular town, just sayin' that it appears to be a spot that has great riding and is biased towards the West Coast guys in the hopes that we can get the ones who aren't as insane as FE Butte to come out and play.

The weather in June is interesting. Most of the high mountain passes don't even open until memorial day because of the snowfall. I rode in Colorado the third week in June one year. We rode from Denver to Moab, UT in one day. It was gorgeous when we left Denver, then as rode through the passes it got colder, started to rain then started to snow. As we descended into the desert of Utah, it got progressively warmer winding up in the 90's. You just can't dress for those kind of weather extremes. I want to do it all again!

Mileage is never the issue for Marlene and I, it's time. Our daughters have been keeping us busy with graduations and weddings. If nothing else conflicts we'll make this trip. It's about 1300 miles one way for us so realistically three days as Marlene is only good for about 400 a day in the saddle. Haven't seen Central CO, just the southern end, but I've been wanting to cross Loveland pass.

Just down the road from the first Doofapalooza I went to,... Salida, CO.

Don't recall going through Poncha Springs, but I'm sure I have. Salida is also good, but either works. Beautiful big country right there.

Its a 1000 mile ride (one way) for me. I'd prolly do it in one day.

I visited Moab in the winter one time to do some winter camping. Arches Ntl Park was deserted and absolutely gorgeous in the snow. It got cold and it snowed pretty good nearly every night, but it was really neat experience.
