Well, after 4,171 mi. I arrived back home around dinner time yesterday. Someday I would like to return at a much more leisurely pace and spend more time enjoying all the area has to offer. Thanks for the offers to meet up/visit/break bread etc., but it's a little difficult to 'visit' at 80/85 mph The guys I was riding with ride like their hair was on fire.

Glad you are back home safe and sound Tom! Sturgis is an incredible place to ride around. Really hoping we can make it back there next year.

Thanks Billy. As for returning, was just wondering if we could pull off a "Sturgispalooza"

That might be difficult to find "one" location where everyone could book a reservation. Possibility of maybe renting a couple houses close together?

Never been, but wouldn't mind going the first weekend, leave by Wednesday. That may be difficult with bookings though as they might want the hole time taken.

Glad your home and safe Tom, and you found some who ride faster than the Delinquents.

Don't necessarily need to have it at Rally time.

The month of June should be comfortable.

Roads, sights, and inns wouldn't change. If anything, there should be lots of rooms at the inns 'off-season'.

And fewer teeming masses and less spectacle may make for a more enjoyable 'palooza'.

We got there Sun. evening and stayed in Rapid City, 25 miles from Sturgis. Went in to Sturgis early Mon. morning (8:00 am) and parking was a snap. Got to see a lot of the vendors and buy T-Shirts etc. before the crowds got crazy. We could do something similar and arrive mid-week the week before, get all the riding done before the crowds on the road get big. Then, those who want/need to head out can beat the crowds and those who want to experience the rally itself have already completed the rides and can spend a day or two in town.

Where'd you stay?

Weather? Super hot, average, tolerable? Sun goes down around 9:30-ish, right?

Took a quick gander at the Sturgis, SD commerce site. Looks like a lot of motels within easy reach of Sturgis. Um, duh.

Never been there. Two day ride from here.

I was there during the Rally in '06. It was cool to see.

Went again the week after Labor day. AWESOME! Great weather and had the entire Black Hills area to ourselves.

Three of the guys in our group are active duty and got us into Camp Rapid, the National Guard base in Rapid City. Stayed in a 12 'man' squad bay. Price was definitely right. Weather wasn't scorching but sun screen was a must. Cooled down quickly after sunset.

September is our favorite month for the Black Hills. No crowds and usually some of the nicest weather of the year. A number of the "attractions" close after Labor Day but there is still plenty to see.

That being said, Black Hills weather is completely undependable no matter when you go. Heat is more common in August than cold but either is possible. One Sturgis week was hot enough to melt bricks- over 100 degrees every day I was there. Another year, the week before Sturgis featured steady rain and so much hail that the snowplows were out to move it off the roads. Ask MN HorseMom Kathy. She watched me wring water out of my boots after we got to her rental.
