Wild Hogs!!!!!
Earlier this past week, I took a ride up to southern New York state to pick up a part for the scoot. Along the way, I came wayyyyyyy too close to recreating this scene from Wild Hogs!

As I was riding up a two lane road at about 45mph, I noticed a Turkey Vulture dining along the right side edge of the pavement. I slowed and he payed no attention until just as I was reaching his location and he decided to take off. If you've seen them, you know they have a substantial wing span. As he began flapping his wings and taking flight, his right wing tip hit the fairing just in front of the throttle grip as well as the right side mirror. I had ducked behind the windshield and just missed getting clipped.
Oh, and by the way, they are even uglier up close.

Yep, they wait till you are close before getting, slowly, airborne.
On the way home tonight there was a flock of them at the dead deer buffet on the right shoulder. I went into the other lane to give them wide berth. But little did I know, they were cleared for takeoff into / across that lane. I'm very glad they didn't regurgitate their payload onto the car. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk

I've seen them dump a load at takeoff before too. You don't want than on anything either..

We have a 4 buzzard rule here.
If there are just a couple, slow down and they avoid you. If there are a larger bunch feeding on a large carcass, they tend to avoid each other first and can fly in any direction. A survival mechanism kicks in to help them get airborne and as a defensive measure. They regurgitate to lighten the load and if they get you---you will head for the nearest creek if you have any sense at all.

Reading the 'bomb load' stories, I guess I got lucky. I'll take it!
Even so, think I still have a piece of saddle wedged tightly in 'the crack'.

My closest encounter was one bouncing off of the top edge of the windshield... And it was a comparatively tiny blackbird

As long as they're not circling above you you're good!

Glad you're OK!
Riding the Hill Country last weekend we came up on a group of them dining in our lane. One didn't want to give up the fine meal he had and stayed put. We had to cross into the oncoming lane and go around him

Glad you escaped that one Scabby! If memory serves, Josh has a story to tell about a buzzard encounter on a bike as well
