I would like some elaboration on your experience. Are you saying the Amsoil labs gave you bad results?

Blackstone....not me, but riding buddies, yes bad results, from what I can assume is out of cal instruments. Split sample, different results. 2008 motor running mobile 1. I have never used Blackstone but based on the error that I am familiar with I personally would not trust their conclusions, my opinion should in no way influence where you choose to send your oil, its your motor.

Latest and the greatest. We'll see what a dyno tune does for the heat which is goosing the viscosity.

I rigged up a fake dip stick tube once, filled with Hershey's syrup, waited till the commissioners were walking around. Pulled the stick, sniffed it for a bit and then ran it across my tongue.

They scooted out of the shop real quick.

Russ,

Find a lab that will do an FTIR so we can see oxidation and nitration.

Insight services does overnight results and Herguth Labs is 2 day.
You won't necessarily get the pithy opinions, but that's what we're for,

At your friendly neighborhood nuclear plant I use Herguth for 99% of my stuff.

I periodically cross check w Insight.

=====
As George says, your sample technique is fine, Listen to him.

----
Now, a little about how this works.

The elements are quantified in a spectrometer. Either ICP or Rotrode. (Then there is wet chemistry....

Rotrode sucks a sample into a porous carbon disk. That disk is then spun and electrical arc burned. Not common at all.

The common way is via ICP. Inductively coupled plasma. A sample os drawn into a tube and fed into a plasma arc torch.

Both methods analyze the light coming out and count photons in specific wavelengths, giving the numbers on the reports.

The drawback to the cheap ICP, it has a 10 micron limit. You can't even come close to seeing that. In reality, anything over about 6 may not be completely consumed by the flame.

The result is that you could dope a clean sample with iron filings and dirt and get perfect results, because that is visible stuff and too big for the machine.

The rotrode would see that stuff, But no one uses them for routine work.

The other choice is to filter a sample on fine media and disolve the whole works on acid, then ICP it.

Or, get real fancy, and place the filter in an Electron microscope and do electron backscatter. I get that doen frequently enough. Herguth has a gizmo that looks at every particle and does size, aspect ratio, and composition. Pricey. But sometimes I want to KNOW what is going on.

/end ramble.

To recap, you're doing good.

Change labs

Add FTIR so we can see nitration and oxidation.

A virgin sample would be nice too as a douple check on Visc out of the bottle.
