Clutch Friction plates.
My friend, who is a motor mechanic for the state trooper training academy. Replaced his shift shaft seal a few weeks back. While the thing was apart he got the brainstorm to "clean" his friction plates in solvent and resoak them in ATF.
Now his clutch is not releasing well. Then he said something about the "new solvent" the California safe kind, which is a water soap corrossive solution. It just dawned on me the reason auto trans fail when water / coolant gets in the trans, the water breaks down the friction matieral on the friction plates. I wonder?    $$$$!

i would never "clean" the friction plates.....their designed to be soaked in oil. in fact i soak the new ones before installing them.....a new clutch "pack" will run him about $120 from jenny.....that's frictions only.....IIRC the Steel drive plates were about 50 or so.....

Yeah I know, after five years in the oil bath, why would he even think about "cleaning" them.
