Using tin foil when changing the oil filter...

Dripping oil onto the garage floor when changing the oil filter has always been a problem for me. Oil drips from the filter mounting flange and out of the oil filter itself due to how it must be manuevered out of the frame area.

I've tried the oil filter box method with no sucess.... liter soda bottle: no joy.

I then tried slipping a piece of aluminum foil under the oil filter, forming it up and behind the flange, and cupping it to create a trough while extending out over the frame near the kickstand so that any spilled oil will drip into a pan.

I've never had a single drop hit the floor using this method and it takes 2 seconds to do. When I'm done, I just slide it out and fold it in on itself to contain the remaining oil.

Here are a couple of pics.

I'm impressed. I bought a trough from Drag Specialties to do the same. It's a piece of crap and I still manage to get oil on the deck.

What brand of aluminum foil?

Heavy duty or regular?

Shiny side of the foil up or down?

Kind of lacking for technical info in this post. :coffee:

I need oil to hit the floor, otherwise there would be
no stains on the knees of my jeans!

The stuff in the photo is regular and was touchy to say the least. I prefer shiny side so as not to clash with my chrome... scratched as it is...

I tried using a ziploc bag on my last filter change.
Worked like a charm. Not a drop spilled

I still think my filter box solution is simpler and just as effective... though you don't have the foil handy for the alien brain scan protection. :harhar:

:roflback:

Yeah, if you pull it off to make the trough, it leaves you vulnerable...

The foil has the look of chrome. Very sharp.....

Thanks 8. That looks to be a good solution. I've tried other methods with limited success.

Good timing on this. Will give it a go this weekend.
