A new adventure
I have been thinking about taking this plunge for some time, but just had not pulled the trigger. Now that the bike is out of commission and I'm likely not going to be riding for 3-4 months I decided to make the leap.
I have a number friends who are involved in this sport and they convinced me of the fun and flexibility. So, without further delay, here is my new to me Kayak. This is a Sea Stream Angler 120 PD (Peddle Drive). It's not a top of the line by any means. In fact, it's probably closer to the bottom of the peddle drive units but it's a start. Sleeveless is already interested too, so I'm actively looking at adding more to the stable.

As I'm planning to add at least one more, and possibly a double seater I picked up this trailer recently. It's got storage and can haul 3 fishing kayaks in flat mode, or up to 6 if stacked on their sides. It's a converted galvanized boat trailer that was modified. Has 15' wheels that really make it easy to move around by hand. Even with 1 bad shoulder.
The lower storage box had a broken lock assembly. That I fixed tonight after dinner. What should have been a 10 minute job took more than an hour and some custom modifications, but it's working.

You don't know just how right you are...
Old town Sportsman Salty PDL 120. The choice came down to the regular sportsman or the salty. As I already have the Sea Stream, I chose the Salty for the second kayak. This hull design is for choppier water like the surf /off shore or high traffic lakes from boat wakes. It's still good in calm rivers and lakes too. Have to drive down to Moneta later this week and pick it up. Bought it Saturday while down visiting my Brother/S.I.L. and our friend John.

Some updates.
The plastic cargo box between the rails had to go. It was just too flimsy and I could see it coming apart. I found a new box on Marketplace on the way home from picking up the new Old Town Sportsman. It was almost a perfect fit for the plastic POS that was on the trailer.

The next thing that had to go was the old Thule storage box that was coming apart. The bottom of the box around the mounting brackets was cracked and getting worse. I think this was because of the flexing of the supports on the trailer. I addressed this by adding some side supports between the upper and lower support arms. I made them removable so they can be removed for loading/unloading the kayaks from the side.
The supports were made from 1-1/2" EMT conduit. The 1-3/4" ID exhaust elbows and couplings from the local automotive stores are an exact fit. I'm going to get some "bright" cold galvanizing spray and touch them up at some point so they resemble the galvanized coating on the EMT conduit. In this picture you can also see the 8" PVC Conduit Carrier that was added for fishing pole storage. I'll describe that in the next post.

For the fishing pole storage I bought two 8" conduit carrier flip up door kits. I used one on each end of the 8" pvc conduit. To eliminate weight, I used PVC Drain downspouts, and some 8' fluorescent tube protectors stacked inside to separate the fishing poles. It provides some nice separation and I can slide 3-4 poles in from each end. Total of at least 8 rods can be stored inside with a weather proof lock on the outside.
8" PVC conduit is ridiculously expensive right now. I found some on Facebook market place for a fraction of what they want in the stores.

The existing white steel rims were showing their age and had some significant rust forming. I replaced them with new Galvanized steel rims and 205/75/15 tires. I also checked the bearings and had to tighten one up that was a little loose.
The fenders also had some clearance issues, so I adjusted that with some galvanized spacer washers and now the fender is centered over the tire better than it was.

This was the first launch of the new Old Town Sportsman Salty 120 PDL.
Two poles is ok. The third one facing forward is an issue. My opinion is it should be facing backward like the other two. This kayak has a more refined pedal system than that of the Sea Stream. I think the Sea Stream is a little more stable in calm water and is another 1.5 inches wider than the Old Town.
