I've added some tach information for Road Kings... not sure how much of it applies, but here is a link to that thread:

Everything is the same between the the king and the fatboy except where that elusive pink wire is.

I like that RK tach though, looks neat.

Thanks guys for the work.

I'm looking at my 2004 manual but don't see a schematic for that tibs. Are you finding that in the regular service manual or the other electrical manual?

Going to go pull of the speedometer console and look for it.

sorry to hi jack Moose, i have another question if i may. There are two mounting bolts on the backside on my tach. on the schematic it shows two black wires one of which goes to ground and the light. the other goes to the light but no ground.it looks like a hatchet job under the cover with spliced crimped connections. the previous owner had used a peice of diamond plate to make the backside brackets which both mounting bolts go through. will this cause the tach not to work if it is grounded out.should i put a plastic washer in between the contacts on one of the posts to aleviate this?

Yep, you have a single fire coil, and unless your tach can support that, you will need to seek out the tach pulse.

What year/model bike? If its a twin cam, You cannot use the coil at all. If its an EVO with say a Daytona I think you can use a special wire they have on it. It all really depends on what you have for an ingnition module, as that is what tells the coil to fire. Some tach can support this also - so if I knew the tach you had I might be able to answer that as well.

The ground/light issue shouldnt be a problem, Mine has three wires, one is the light/power (orange/white - ignition power), one is ground (black), one is the pulse from the coil (pink, which I beleive is standard on all harleys for Tach).

Correct, and they will be different from the Carb and EFI models.

Now, I did find out that the console is prewired on 2004 up softails with a tach signal over at Dakota's site - so you probably can get all you need for the tach under the console.

Power is only 600ma, and ground can be under the left or right tin with the headlight ground.

Remember, Pink wire. Think about Doof Babes.

Yeah, find out what the ignition module is, S&S, Dyna or whatever, then it would be easy to find out where to hook the tach up.

Yup this Doof engineer finally figured that one out. So far I'm not having luck. I looked at the diagram in the manual of the 12 pin connector that goes directly to the speedometer. There are no pink wires on it. There is an orange and an orange/white that are for Ignition and Accessory. I don't think that either of these are it. The other wires are nowhere close to pink in color and account for other signals that I think are obviously not it.

Then there's the 3 pin connector that goes to the ignition knob at the bottom of the console. It's pretty obvious that none of those 3 are what we're looking for. These I'm certain are just power to the other instruments.

About time for bed last nite however, I started looking over the connector to the lights that are between the speedo and the ignition switch. There are 5 lights (left/right turn signals, neutral indicator, oil light, and hi-beam indicator). But there are 7 wires on this connector. I'm guessing one of these is ground but maybe the other is for RPM. As it was time for bed, I didn't verify with the manual yet. That's tonite.
