why do they have three holes when you can use one type oil?

You know that really is a good question to me. If they want you to run syn3 or whatever in all three why make them separate? Especially the motor/primary. I could see leaving the tranny out, cause I just cant see how even they think syn3 or any motor oil would be the best in there.

Because the motor, primary and tranny are 3 different componets, bolted together....excluding the Sportster.

<<< no harley mechanic here so pardon whats maybe a dumb question.... but... isn't the primary area created just by bolting on the piece that surrounds the primary chain etc, then the primary cover and ispection cover on that? ... I mean it doens't have a 'back' does it... the back of the primary is just the 'outside' of the motor right? So making them used common oil would be about as simple as putting a hole there?

You would think, on the surface....but each component utilizes it's own unique lubrication system, with different pressures. Pumping oil throughout the entire mechanism would be detrimental to each specific application....plus,..I'm not convinced that motor oil is sufficient for the transmission...it was always a no no, until H-D came up with their own syn.

clutch residue in your rings, cyl. walls...? no way...

one component failure would trash the whole thing...

probably be hard to keep fluid levels at optimum height in each component...

jus' sayin'

Excellent point X. Kinda like one of these copiers with the fax, copy, and print. If one bites the dust, they are all down.

yes no argument from me on motor oil not being good for the tranny. and I sure got no problem with having a seperate oil for the clutch than the motor for the reasons given by you xkvator. course jap bikes have run lots of miles with the same oil on the clutch. (dont take that to be any indication of wanting my harley to be anymore like a jap bike just an observation. )

edit---------

good observation by you to Rock... thats why I refuse to buy one of those all in one printers... when you apply that to my bike I get it now!
