Clutch Question

My clutch slips, I have adjusted it. Worse when I get on it, the motor seems to over power it. My bike is slightly better then stock dyno'd at 80hp / 92ft. I am thinking stock with the stiffer spring. Any suggestions.

I did about 1500 mile trip this weekend, it is really becoming a problem

How many miles on the clutch now?

When I did the 103 at 65k we ended up putting in a Barnett clutch pack.

Stiffer spring would be your cheaper alternative, but maybe your plates are worn out.

I'm going to try the stiffer spring first. Can I install it through the derby cover?

It can be done, but after doing it once I'll pull the primary cover. If yours is slipping you've probably already smoked the plates, spend the $150 or so for a set of Barnett plates and do it right.

The bike has right at 40K. Would you recommend using the stiffer spring with the Barnett plates?

Is this set what I need?

I initially had the Barnet spring that comes with the upgrade installed, but it was much too stiff so I swapped the stock HD one back in. 35k miles on this clutch pack and no slippage. That's with lots of hard accelerations in the mountains and occasional towing the trailer.

Thanks, I plan to go that route. I could always add the stiffer spring if needed. What does the added plate mean? The obvious?

Yeah, I figured it could always be put back in if needed, or I go bigger.

Added plate is obvious..

You might look at these too:

Used the stiffer spring and a VPC 83. Was at 108 / 108 or so. Azz-kicking clutch.

The stock clutch uses a half size innermost friction disc and plate along with a wave spring, gives a softer engagement, the extra disc set replaces this with a full size disc/plate and no spring, it'll hook up a bit harder but unless you spend all your time doing slow speed drills you won't miss the other set up. Stock spring should work fine with this set, if you don't feel it grabs hard enough get an SE spring, you can buy them by themselves. Make sure to soak the plates for at least an hour in the primary fluid you plan to use, otherwise you'll scorch the plates on your first start up.

You'll like that clutch. I've got one in Vader, and it's slick.

Originally with the 103 I had the added the VPC. After replacing the stock plates with the Barnett pack, removed the VPC, went back to the stock spring and still no slipping.

I saved the VPC and the Barnett spring should it be needed.

Just a question, is it necessary to replace the steel plates when its actually the friction plates that are worn out?
