American Legion Legacy Run

THE AMERICAN LEGION LEGACY RUN -- August 18-26, 2007
Indianapolis, Indiana to Reno, Nevada: 2,100 miles for the children of our fallen heroes.
(Indianapolis, 22 February 2007)

The American Legion’s National Commander, Paul A. Morin, has approved the planning and coordination of the second annual American Legion Legacy Run and gathering of all interested American Legion Riders at the 89th Annual American Legion National Convention in Reno, Nevada in August 2007.

Initial plans provide for a gathering of all interested American Legion Riders and other motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the United States in Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 18, 2006, for a kickoff event and rally hosted by The American Legion Riders of Indiana and Speedway Post 500, near the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The assembled riders will depart Indianapolis early on August 19, and rumble for six days and through seven states en route to the American Legion National Convention in Reno, Nevada.

Itinerary:

August 18, 2007 Gathering of Riders hosted by The American Legion Riders of Indiana. Final Registration and Road Captain training at American Legion Post 500, Indianapolis, Indiana.

August 19, Early morning assembly and departure from Post 500.

August 19, Overnight stop in Iowa City, Iowa

August 20, Overnight stop in Grand Island, Nebraska

August 21 - Overnight stop in Cheyenne, Wyoming

August 22 - Overnight stop in Evanston, Wyoming

August 23 - Overnight stop in Elko, Nevada

August 24 - Early afternoon arrival in Reno, Nevada

August 25 - American Legion Riders National Rally

August 26 - American Legion National Convention Parade

Riders from all points in the United States may preregister online and join The American Legion Legacy Run as it proceeds west.

The American Legion Legacy Run will pause at pre-planned sites along the route to visit with severely wounded warriors who have returned from of the War on Terror.

Riders Chapters and Legion Family volunteers along the route are even now helping plan refueling stops and coordinating with local law enforcement. Nationally, Riders Chapters are planning fundraising rides and runs and are coordinating PONY EXPRESS (see <http://www.alr135.org/pe>) routes to pick up donations from posts across the nation.

Registration--$35 for each rider, and $15 for each passenger--is open to all regardless of intent to ride, and all registrations collected help to offset costs of running the event. All paid registrations will receive a special patch set, mapbook, wristband and associated material. Registration includes entry to all Legion functions and activities related to the Run itself, including the Indianapolis gather and kickoff events, the Run and all stops enroute, and the gathering of Riders at the National Convention hosted by the Nevada American Legion Riders.

Registration will be available online at www.legion.org/legacyrun by mid-March, and at selected locations and larger ALR Chapters nationally during the months leading up to the event.

--------------
Riders from all Departments, coast-to-coast, are asked to conduct fundraising rallies and rides independently during the months leading up to the Convention. All monies collected for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund will be combined into Department totals presented to The National Commander in Reno by The American Legion Riders.

The intent of The American Legion Legacy Run is to highlight the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces during their wartime service in more than 130 countries around the globe today. We want to honor these men and women, and their families, for their sacrifices made daily as they keep our families safe. All monies raised during the Run will be donated to The American Legion's Legacy Scholarship Fund.

More to follow. Please pass along to the Legion Riders and indeed all interested Patriot Guard, Pony Express, and any other veteran riders organizations within your Departments, and encourage them to contact me at any time.

Chapters, Posts, Units, and Squadrons may wish to donate directly to The American Legion Legacy Run. All contributions of $500 or more are recognized with a National Commander Certificate. Make checks payable to THE AMERICAN LEGION LEGACY RUN and mail to Internal Affairs, ATTN: Legion Riders, PO Box 1055, Indianapolis, IN 46206.

THE AMERICAN LEGION LEGACY RUN UPDATE

(Update 4, Indianapolis, May 2, 2007)

Why do we ride? For the children!

(AARON THOMPSON / GANNETT TENNESSEE)

Indianapolis, Indiana to Reno, Nevada: 2,100 miles for the children of heroes. Our goal is to gather $250,000 to help fund a college education for the children of our fallen comrades in the current conflicts.

Registration IS NOW OPEN for The American Legacy Run, August 19-24, 2007, a 2,100-mile motorcycle adventure from Indianapolis to Reno and the 89th Annual American Legion National Convention.

See www.legion.org/legacyrun for complete details.

LATEST UPDATES:

THE PONY EXPRESS RIDES AGAIN! See www.alr135.org/pe or www.ALPonyExpress.org and click on "current mission". Bedford, Texas, April 4, 2007 - Resurrecting a concept from the Wild West, a group of American Legion members from Post 135 in Texas are forming a nationwide volunteer group within the American Legion Riders to deliver collected donations for the American Legacy Scholarship Fund to the 89th National American Legion Convention in Reno, Nevada, August 24-30, 2007.

The Pony Express is a post program started by Riders of Texas Post 135 to raise funds for The American Legion Legacy Run. The response to this initiative from all over the United States has been magnificent, with posts and riders from New York State to Florida, California, and Oregon signing on with local and regional fundraising charity runs and routes. In many states, Riders will visit every Post and carry pledges of support directly to the state's American Legion headquarters. In this way, each Department Commander can maximize the donations from within the state

Pony Express Messengers wear the same badge, and affirm by the same oath, as the old West Riders of a bygone era. See www.alr135.org/pe.
