…but ‘Zerk’s accident brings up an interesting issue and phenomenon of today’s online social communities.

I have actually given this some thought, believe it or not. Especially since I am not married and live alone. My children and my close girlfriends know about the doof forum because I talk about it so much. In fact, much to my surprise, for my 50th birthday party my daughter googled phreak, found him online, emailed him and through him located dinero and txhawg, all of whom showed up in Fort Worth for the celebration.
In the case of 'zerk, Karen contacted Mega. Interesting article though. Especially the part about the business springing up. Amazing, actually.

This place is different than most that I've been to. I have never seen such a big group of people that genuinely care for one another, even though a lot of them have never even met before.

Here, maybe more than anywhere else on the WWW, so many of our "members" actually get to spend quite a bit of REAL time with other "members." That being the case in our little world, I think that, for the most part, if something happened to one, others would know and report fairly quickly. Here in the midwest section, it seems that all of our family members know each other too.
I don't know about others here, but usually if I haven't seen one of our regulars for a bit I start hunting 'em down.

This is something I have wondered about. This time Karen knew what to do. But this happens in real life too. I had a friend in IN, who left messages on my personnel phone, which the cops had. They had no idea. My friends back home found out, when local paper ran a article, and they happened to catch it, about a week later.
