Starter or Battery

...just replaced the battery in February...

...could just do the starter clutch (if that be the problem) but would still have a 11 year old starter in it.

Why doesn't just the solenoid go bad, it' a cheaper part to replace.

...or did I just answer my own question...

Those do get quite a bit of stress in use, 11 years is a good run.

I'm leaning toward thinking its a battery issue.
When I got home, I checked the voltage while it was running and I'm getting 13.7 to 14.1, so it does not seem to be a changing issue.
I put the bike on the battery tender last night and it had no problems starting this morning; yeah, I rode to work - love riding the bike.

On a side note: What is this thing?
I'm thinking its the neutral switch thingy.
When I was looking at the bike yesterday, I noticed that one of the connectors was totally off and the other was barely on.
How I missed that when I was doing an oil change is doofy.

On my 2000 Dyna, it's the speedo sensor.

...explains why the neutral light started working. I thought I just had a bulb problem and wasn't going to mess with it until Dec. or Jan.

Still thinking battery, but won't know until I get it off and have it load tested.

What are the actual symptoms of the problem?

Speedo sensor is in the transmission case a little more outboard of that cover. Held in by one allen head.

Starter intermittently engaging to start the bike.

Again, this morning it started right up after I had it on the battery tender overnight.

Goggling our DC site I discovered that Dippsy, Geezer and others have had this problem. Battery was one fix, starter clutch was another. I find it hard to believe that a starter could go bad on a bike that has only 18K on it.

Anyway, first thing is taking the battery in for a load test, then go from there.

A bad clutch usually engages, but then let's go under torque and often sounds like grinding. Battery/starter motor/wiring failures often have solid engagement at the ring gear, but won't turn over the engine.

You might want to check the ground wire were it connects to the frame for a loss connection. It would act similar to a weak / dead battery

Intermittent as in nothing when you hit the start button? When that happens do the lights dim like the starter has a load on it? Charge the battery and have it load tested for free at autozone or the like.
