They have done a lot of testing with crash test dummies on inner fairing colors and decided that flat black doesn't blind the rider with light reflecting off shiny bright colors.....
Used to be when you read a moto-journalist doing a magazine story of the pro's and cons of a new model they always griped about be blinded by shiny gauges. |

I have one of those! Don't think I'll be stuffing it into a ragged plastic hole, though.

There is also an IR plastic welder out there, but I have never used one. A body shop might have one you could try, or they could charge you for them to try.... Eastwood sells them; as I recall, they're pricey.

went back and searched some ended auctions at ebay, by the time you add in the $30-$40 to ship something that big it ends up running about $150 or near it. Figured since this one came with switch cap, and I could look at it and make sure it was in new shape I'd just pick it up. Besides in BS'ing with him a bit while I was picking it up I mentioned I was gonna lose the air temp gauge while I had it off and put on a oil temp gauge, he said next time he got one in he'd just give it to me, so the price is gonna all work out in the end anyway. He knows of a paint guy here who has done some HD work in the past with a good reputation, he's gonna give him a call Monday and get me a quote for painting it two tone for me too. If I walked in off the street I prolly wouldn't get as good a price as he can get as by calling a friend so that works out nice to I guess. Who knows if I can get it painted and back fast enough I may go ahead and make an effort to get it changed out before ES. But I just know if I do something else is gonna break to cause me delays.

ok, done did get it repaired.
ended up using a dremel tool to revomve all the original epoxy I tried to use. put the smallest hose clamp I could get my hands on around the plastic boss, light epoxy on it to hold it, fill original hole with drillable tappable JB weld, drill out, tap, insert new threaded brass insert with light coating of epoxy on it, let set up, then packed JB weld putty aournd the plastic boss, hose clamp and all. It aint pretty, but it worked. Finally got the winshield on I was trying to put on when this all started. 11" flat top bronze tinted from Custom FLHT Windshields. Very happy with it so far, stereo sounds better cause it keeps wind from coming right over fairing over speakers, will block cold air off hands in winter much better I can already tell. Wish I hadn't had to go through all this trouble to get it on as I did, but that part was my fault. On the bright side, I did go ahead and get a spare inner fairing for $150, and will be taking it in to painter here in town where dealer takes all their stuff for painting. Quote of $350 to do two tone paint job to match my paint, including two tone pin strip to match my paint. More than I had wanted to pay for painting but it should look really nice having the inner match the outer exactly when its all said and done. Here are some poor quality night pics of the new windshield, pardon the bugs, someday I might get it washed from my trip to CC, going on two weeks now, starting to bug me

Those inserts have always made me nervous. Glad you got it fixed up Les. Nobody ever sees inside the fairing anyway so pretty doesn't count.

Yep, they get a very respectful tightening when I have to remove the batwing.
