Thanks Tom .... It appears it was a couple of things, both related to Google settings.

I was, it appears, auto logged into, and STAY logged in at Google Gmail
Also my CHAT settings let anyone see me
Also, TALK (on the table) was 'disabled' really only need to be 'logged out' disable some apps and they get all weird

should be fixed now
