I have ordered four Lenovos, two Toughbooks and two Dells through each of their 'enterprise' channels and as Ed says, they are far superior to the off the shelf stuff at BB. The differences are in the build quality, the case stiffness/ruggedness, the custom components (order the graphics card /processor/hard drive/screen YOU want, not the combo on the counter) better quality components in general and pick the OS and the features you like. You can also order them WITHOUT the preloaded trial~ware.
The only disappointment was the most recent (now old) Dell...it has a flimsy case and a soft bouncy keyboard.

I have an iPad as well; take it on trips. But it won't do any computing and is really poor when it comes to input/output devices. You can't even take iPhone pictures and upload them into your iPad without a special cable or device.
iPads are great for email and Internet browsing. Not so much for anything else.

We looked at a Microsoft Surface in a Milwaukee mall last week. It's intriguing. The "Pro" model doubles as a computer. You can run any application that likes Windows on it. (ie Word, Excel, Garmin Mapsource, et al). Yesterday, I almost pushed the button on the website to buy one. I think the Microsoft Surface would be a great traveling pad/notebook.

Yup. Look for a refurbished one.

Toshiba Satellite P50.

Lenovo left a bad taste after their screw up crashed the Bios in my last lap top doing a devices and drivers update.
"Sorry Sir, we don't offer and assistance in this case".
Alrighty then. Guess you will be at the top of my list for a replacement!

Side note. Asking which brand lap top is best is pretty close to asking a preferred oil question.
Close to which flavor ice cream is the best.

Vanilla, of course!

I am starting to really hate Win8, but I am extremely happy with my Fujitsu AH562 machine.

I have an ASUS. Except for crashing two days before the warranty ran out it's been fine. Service at Best Buy was deplorable and I will never buy anything from them again. They put the new drive in wrong. I had months of being driven nuts by it until I finally called my computer guru from the law firm days and got it fixed properly.

Windows 8 really takes some getting used to. I've been using it on my desktop for 6 months or more. It's not nearly as intuitive as old Windows. For instance, it's hard to figure out how to print a document. Right click sometimes gives a print option . . . . sometimes not. I had to google "Print using Windows 8" to figure out how. I wasn't the only inquiry, it was a very popular topic. .

I understand that Microsoft is going to release a new Windows 8 that will be much more user friendly.

The other good thing about buying a machine through the mfr's enterprise channel (the business website) is that unlike the retail stores, you can buy a machine loaded with Win 7. You are forced to buy Win8 at the retail level.
