PanHeads 1948-1965
This is it for my little excursion into Harley history.
1948 introduced a new engine style and new wishbone frame. The new Pan rocker covers were designed to keep more of the oil inside the rocker boxes. Edit: Links are in post 11. The last link allows you to find options available by model year. Added downloadable tech sheet to this post. 1948 EL 61 cubic inch 1948 FL 74 cubic inch 1948 E series police bike Last edited by TerryMiller; 11-23-2008 at 09:02 PM. |

Some interesting links.
Good tech
http://www.hydra-glide.com/index.php interesting history http://home.san.rr.com/harley/one.htm This last one has a lot of good info including optional equipment. http://home.san.rr.com/harley/panheadhistory.htm A lot of the pictures came from here as it's hard to find panheads with stock appearance. It amazes me how much development they did in those years.
You end up with a truly modern motorcycle except for disc brakes. |

The electric start helped this a bunch. I'm tired just watching
Every now and then I long for a kicker. Then I just watch this video another time. |

I've kicked over a friend's panhead before. Early '60's dresser. It was the first Harley I ever rode; I was 16 or 17, I think. The thing backfired and damned near launched me over the handlebars,... all the while, my friend was laughing his ass off.
1984 (first year of the Evo) had both a kicker and electric start on the softtail.
