5th & 6th Gear Noise

Okay. I have learned to ive with the noise in 5th gear on my Ultra, but I also get it in 6th and it seems worse.

I just put all new fluids in the bike at my 30,000 mile service and it didn't improve.

In fact, in 6th, it almost sounds like valve rattle. I'm not in 6th until at least 70 mph.

This weekend I was running 70 to 75 with the cruise control on and when I hit a slight upgrade, it clattered like crazy.

Should I put something heavier in the transmission? I'm running Amsoil 75W-90 Severe Gear right now.

Well Jim, I got tired of the clatter and installed the IDS. I know it is a band aid but the clatter is in the design on HD's new 6-speed gear box. Plenty of threads on that as you know.

I put it on in my garage before we went on the mud bug run.

No more clatter. But the best part is being able to use sixth gear a little more often... meaning not down shifting every time if I have to slow down for something.

I always run the Mobil 1 75W-140. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, or deaf, but I don't get the noise. With the Texas heat, I believe that heavier is better

What did it end up costing you?

I was looking for a poor, old, fixed-income, retired guy's fix.

That's kind of what I'm wondering. It does get worse in the heat.

IDS - Isolated Drive System 40287-07. I got it from Zanotti's ($198.00 and had them press the bearing in $12.00) plus shipping.

http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...bmLocale=en_US

If you wait until you need a rear tire change, you can add it then. Might be called a band-aid, but it works and the 08's have it. When IDS is installed, adjust your belt on the loose side.

Pretty much what the IDS was designed to cure.

Looked up my receipt via email...

I paid $204 with bearing pressed on from Discount Biker. (includes shipping)

http://www.discountbiker.com/

Not sure what they are charging now but if you email a price request, they are pretty quick in getting back to you.

I think it is one of the best mods I have put on "Ole Gal". Nice and smooth shifting and starting now. (reference the knock on crank)

Mine sat in the box for damn near 7 months. I finally got around to installing it when I put on the Avons. Simple install as well. I would have done it sooner but I just did not have time with getting ready for Brianne, then her birth, insert another excuse here and so on....

I'll have to look into it. It makes sense to do that and forget about it.

Depending on your riding the 75-140w should be fine..

Use synthetic if you can find it...

I was reading a thread on the other side of the pond on this subject yesterday and the fix that Thorns is talking about is way cheaper than the one I was reading about on the other thread...

It was about 800.00.....

Well the price we are talking about is not through HD and definitely not installed by HD. I have seen a lot of people quote high prices ordering and having HD install the IDS. But it can be had for much less and the install is simple.

Two sets of hands is really REALLY a good idea. It was a tight squeeze lining everything up.

IF you can get it on before ES, I predict you will enjoy the ride more.

why don't the 06 Dynas complain? They got 6speed. The IDS, Ithink is only for 07s. Not sure if, or why it couldn;t be used on 06 dynas though.

But I think there is more to this.

I do not hear a 5th gear whine. Do hear 1st. April prodcution of 07

Not sure about the dynas or why that incarnation of the 6 speed does not make any noise if it does not.

It is not a whine but a clatter in 5th and 6th. I know some folks don't hear it but that is probably due to their riding style, pipes, stereo. HD acknowledged the problem by introducing the IDS. And confirmed the problem by making it standard on 08's.

Personally I think it is BS they did not issue a recall, installing it on 07's after they made it standard on 08's.
