I think the SE version is standard now. I believe that is the way to go.
We should wait for somebody who knows what the heck they're talking about to confirm though.

From what I've read the SE version is the only one out there now, it still doesn't permanently cure the problem. You'll still have to replace it again in another 15-30k miles depending on how much low rpm use it gets. Although Ms.T had hers replaced recently and she was waiting on an updated part number so maybe HD has it figured out.

On my '07 Ultra, I was averaging a starter about every six months--sometimes with clutch basket and ring gear--until I went with the Screaming Eagle Comp kit. Soo far I have gone a little over a year and a half with no problems. Mine was all under warranty but they would not repair it correctly. They just stuck the OEM crap back in. My Indie finally fixed it (under warranty) with the correct new Screaming Eagle parts and I only had to pay the difference. Tonya--is it okay if I say it that way?

From what my Indy tells me, the weak link in a Harley starter is the starter clutch. Mine went out and I got a lifetime clutch from www.mesmotorcycle.com thru my Indy. It set me back 140 installed, but I removed the starter my self and took it to the shop. Took about 15 20 mins to put in on the bench. Mine just went out completly one day and left me stranded. Thank god there was a big hill to coast down and bump start.

Here is a video of how the bike sounds when starting cold. You can hear the knock on start up. I'll get her warm and try to capture the clashing sound I am referring to which we believe to be the compensator.

I got a video of the sound the bike is making today.
One of the mechanics happen to be outside when I was shooting this at the dealer. He walked over said, I had he thought it was the starter/clutch basket ring issue. I went ahead and got part numbers for both compensator and the starter/clutch kit.... wow. The starter is $375 and the clutch basket kit is $509. I hope it is the compensator. I should be able to tell once I get the primary cover off. |

A starter clutch is a relatively quick fix and the part should be < $100. A whole starter might be $375. Just helped do one on a friend's bike and IIRC it was ~$89 and the indy put the clutch in the starter for him too.
Biggest annoyance w/ the job is pulling the outer primary to get at the jackshaft. Sent from my DROID RAZR

FYI Whenever I start my truck or bike, I squeeze/depress in the clutch.
Take some pressure off the starter.

Right. Thanks Tim. Dealer said I was gonna have to replace entire clutch basket kit - $509 if that was the problem. Was your buddy's ring gear not damaged?

If it's an 07 or later I don't think you need to remove the outer primary cover, though it probably is a good idea to check the ring gear. I remember just removing 2 allen bolts and the dang thing just fell out

This sounds very much like mine when the starter clutch went south. And, mine reacted the same cold vs. hot. Not much noise when cold but much more obvious when hot and everything tighter. I replaced the whole starter with a high torque one from Eastern Performance and it came with a lifetime warranty on the starter clutch.
