Changing rear brake pads tomorrow
It is time to change them out on the Softail.
Any tips on getting the pistons to retract easy? Last time it was a bitch getting the new pads back in.

I take a paint stick, stirrer, and break, shove to halves up in there to open it up. In fact there is a broke greasy paint stick in my tool chest for this. Helps for putting tires back on too.

Small c-clamp works.

Nice think about paint stick, is soft, won't mar anything, plus its pretty damn easy. Opens right up.

I've always done it with the back tire on.

I did it with the tire on. Used a small prybar - effortless really. Had both front and rear brakes done in about an hour.

Ya I do it with the tire on. But if you got the tire off, I would look at them.
Manual says not to pull the pins out. I always have. I then line the holes up with drift pin or screw driver. |

I've only done it with the wheel off, but the paint stirrer idea sounds like a solid idea.

No, No No........
Only way to do it is. Remove the caliper from the bike, leave the old brake pads installed and force the pistons back. Follow this for cleaning. http://www.lyndallracingbrakes.com/service_tech.htm That's it, no other way is acceptable. |

If you pry the OLD pads open with a BFscrewdriver, you olny mar the OLD pads, you will throw those away anyway.

I do it on the bike on the rear, but usually pull the front calipers off. I
have a wedge made of wood that is stick in between when i pull out the old pads

I just hammer them back into place. The extra material that is removed was not needed anyways. Helps marry them to the rotors.

This works good for changing tires, if the calipers are a little tight. |
