So....

Considering the sizable focus on alcohol by many Doofs and 'zintas, what do y'all do at gatherings to stay sober?

Not a problem for me, but CG has struggled in the past, and even going on a putt to the local roadhouse can be problematic, though she has not been drunk in over a year. I really worry about gatherings with her along, hence our lack of appearances.

From my experience, it is amazing how quick folks pick up on a non-drinker and don't push them at these gatherings.

We are, after all, a family that respects each other in spite of the familial teasing.

Stu Gotz is a particular hero of mine and I would be glad to buy him a Coke any time.

My wife and I don't drink at all. Bring her to AR next year. We'll entertain her for ya....might even turn her into a liberal.

I understand that and would expect nothing less, but how does that play out when everyone's out at the pool at 9pm?

I am not approaching any of this accusingly. I'm really trying to figure this out for my own peace of mind.

Honestly, Du, that's something she'll have to determine. For me it's easy; for others it ain't so easy.

from my recent trip to Junction I can say for a pretty much certainty that I will be drinking a beer or two and then coke many nights at a week long event such as ES. I got to accept that I just cant keep up with the Texas Posse or any Posse for that matter anymore. To old and the next days just hurt to dang bad.

I realize your asking about some thing pretty different but I cant imagine any one being put off by it. Two out of the three nights in Junction, Jenny drank very little if any, just enjoyed setting around and watching the drinkers (me I think most) act stupid.

I was out at the pool until 11 PM at Vukfest (wife was tired and conked out)...and didn't have to have a drink, (my wife and I are both in recovery, she asked me to mention her sobriety as well) there will likely be several of us non-drinkers around...

If YOU feel the need to talk with someone about this please feel free to PM me for my phone number...sometimes it just helps to get things off your chest and information is your best tool...

I don't know what to tell ya, du.
Years back, I use to put away 12-18 beers a night, and do so 3 or 4 nights a week. I don't know what 'turned me around', I know one thing that did was riding the 'cycle.
I rarely drink when we get together for rides, but do on rare occasions partake (i.e. VUKFEST, and one night during my week at Daytona back in March).
I just don't have then need/desire/want to drink like I did in the past.
I don't know why, I know that inside me I have those tendencies to 'bust loose', but I can't even see buying a 6-pack to take home just for the heck of it.
I think now, for me, its got alot to do with having kids. Those little ones are relying on me to shelter, feed and care for them. Plus, kids pick up on parents' behavior, and I don't want them to think that getting 'buzzed' on a nightly basis is a normal thing.

Honestly for me by the time 9:00 at the pool rolls around if people are hitting it hard I leave, sometimes not....depends. You and her can asses the situation. Sometimes there are non-drinkers you can go off and talk to. That is a tough one and I think there is no general answer. Play it by ear. I don't avoid those situations. The people at work have a lot of parties and I've gotten to know who goes and who to hang out with and they do the same so that might apply to your CG.

Du, I can't really address the issue from your side of the fence, but I think all of us have great respect for those who are in recovery.
To be honest, none of us even notice who is or is not drinking out by the pool. With this lot, it's hard to tell. Everybody from here that I have met in person is pretty much the same idiot in person that they are on the forum. The only reason I know who some of the folks are who don't drink is because they've brought it up in conversation. There is never any pressure to drink or anything. There's just a bunch of stuff sitting around that we've gone in on, and those who want it have it, and those who don't, don't.
We're just there to get face time with our friends, and some partake of social lubricant during that time, and some do not feel so inclined.
I don't know if this helped or not, but it's what I've observed.
