Free play????HEEEELLLPPP!!
Ok got the cover off...comp nut looks good but chain is real loose...the manual says upward (not total) free play in upper strand should be 5/8-7/8 inch....So where do I start the measurement from and what the hell is total free play????

Total free play would be pushing down on the chain to the lowest point, and then up to the highest point. You need to measure from the natural low point (where the chain hangs by its own weight) up to the high point.

That sounds right. Just put the rule in there, push up and take the measurement.
Al, I'm surprised it isn't your comp nut assuming you checked all the potential loose items as discussed in the other thread. The loose chain would be more of a slapping sound I think. |

So from the natural hanging low point to the high point should be between 5/8 and 7/8 inch...right?

Be sure to rotate it to the tightest point before adjusting, Al.

I have a plastic L shaped tool with 1/8" notches on it for this job. I make sure the tool touches the bottom of the chain, reference it to the inspection cover opening, push up till the chain stops and that is my measurement.
You can do the same with a sawed off piece of ruler or a paint stirrer with marks on it. Guys use different methods to get the same result. |

Well that's good. Hopefully you take the slack out of the chain and you are back in the saddle.

Put it on a lift to get the back wheel off the ground. Then put it in 3rd gear and rotate the back tire which will turn the chain while finding the tightest spot and adjust from there.

While you're working on it and running in and posting here, are you getting the keys on your keyboard greasy?
