Removing header studs

What is an easy way for me to remove the existing exhaust studs? I have a set of stainless that I want to use as an anti corrosion factor, but haven't had any luck getting the studs out. Any help is appreciated. I haven't resorted to vicegrips because I don't want to dork one up and be left with that one that I can't get a bolt onto.

Thanks!

Swede

Run two nuts together a tight as possible and then put a deep well socket on both of them at the same time. That will hold them solid on the stud and then you need to figure out if they are right hand or left hand threads.

Lets just regard this as a guess since I don't really know anything. But if I were trying to get those studs off, I would thread on a couple of nuts, lock them together and then put a wrench on the motor side nut.

I wait for knowers of things to chime in...

I would agree with Jams & 8-Ball that the double nut trick would be the best. Might also be beneficial to heat the aluminium around the studs with a very small torch flame before you try to back the stud out.

I had to use TWO vise grips on one of mine. The other three came out with the double nut trick.

Just did all 4 yesterday with a set of these. This may not help you out now but worth their weight in gold. I had a bike with 2 snapped studs and this tool pulled them out like nothing...and 8 ball the back nut is the one to turn with the wrench.....

Putting in SS into a aluminum head at the exhaust is not a good idea. You can use high temp never sieze, but Stainless can and will gauld to the aluminum and you will crack the head before they come out. Use neversieze and #8 hardened (black or bronze color).

It has been so long I can't remember if the thread into the heads is a left handed thread or not. Does anybody know and Swede were you turning the correct direction and using some heat as well?

Right handed threads. For those of you that hang to the left, put your hands down to your sides, find the hand being pointed to, and use the other hand. That's the right hand, or not the left hand. Map to follow...if needed.
