Shooting with my son

My son turned 9 this past November and I realized I had got a late start with him. He still didn't have a rifle of his own. Gave him a BB gun a year ago to start teaching him the fundamentals of shooting position, aiming, and gun safety. He did very well with that and never once treated the BB gun (Red Ryder) like it was a toy. So, I dug out of my closet, the first rifle my dad gave to me. A savage model 72 single action .22. It was in good shape except for one thing, the firing pin was broken. Finally got around to getting it repaired and presented it to my son. He was jazzed to say the least. Yesterday we went up to the family farm and went out back to the shooting range (nice to have a 100 acres all to yourself). I set him up at about 25 yards and had him shoot at the steel barrel we tape our targets to. He hit the barrel every time he pulled the trigger. Very impressed. Won't be long before every critter that crawls on the ground out there will run in fear whenever he goes up to visit grandpa on the farm.

I was impressed once again with that rifle. I forgot how stinking accurate it was. With open sights at 25 yards, I was able to land 5 shots in a row in a dime sized area on that barrel. All while using some cheap ammo I bought about 5 years ago just because it was on sale at the time. My eyes aren't what they used to be, but at one time, I could do the same at 50 yards with ease. When the weather warms up, I'll start having shooting compititions with him.

Next will be pistols with him. Teaching him how to handle the Ruger Standard that I learned with and shot compitition with when I was his age. I'm not sure who enjoys it more when we go shooting together, me..or him. All I know is we walk back into the house with huge smiles on our faces.
